there may be a box ticked somewhere that is making it suck
i know on doom 3 when i first fired it up, i was getting fps in the single digits till i fiddled with a couple settings in the CP, cant remember which mind you

any way you go about it, its not the card that is at fault

That quote was in blatant referance to Doom3, which there has been some driver upset with ATI cards.

I've tried everything and I can't get rid of this choppiness in Doom 3. I guess I will have to save for a 6800GT, because I really want to be able to play D3 engine games with decent framerate and AA.

you CLEARLY haven't tried everything then. you should be getting ultra-smooth frame rates.

check your control panel, are you sure you're not forcing full AA/AF?

if it's still like this, even after a reinstall of windows, then something is most definitely broken, mate.

I am not forcing full AA and AF. I have everything on application preference. What amount of AA and AF do you suggest for the doomconfig.cfg file?

I did notice that my doomconfig file contained a "seta_image_ansiotropy="16" " I removed this line and I'm getting higher framerates. Still not as high as I would think they would be, but definately higher than they were.

i wouldn't touch the config file - just tell it, ingame, to use "high" quality. i use that on my 9800pro and i get playable frame rates(25-50) with little/no swapping, even though it's a 128mb card.

I have noticed that some of the tweaks that helped performance with older drivers hurt performance with these drivers.

Vertical sync will do nothing because he is not getting even close to 60fps.
