I decided to give linux yet another try, after sound or 3d acceleration or both not working whenever I tried, as I have plenty of time to fix anything it does to my computer before school starts up again. This time I took my computer over to a friend who knows his way around linux better than I do. I installed mandrake 10.1 at his house (and I am running in it now), but I have a few problems.

He installed DRI drivers on my machine, but X won't start with its driver (At least I think its the driver it installed. Its called "radeon" under the xorg section of the driver list, and that is what was installed by DRI.

This is what I get when I test the settings after selection the driver I mentioned above in the mandrake control center. After I do this, and get the error, I am still running X, but some (but not all) colors are corrupt/mixed up.

    ---------------------------------------
    An error occurred:
(EE) Failed to load module "glx" (once-only module, 135962511)
(WW) RADEON: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:1:0:1) found

    Try to change some parameters
    ---------------------------------------

There are a few things I'd like to fix on this computer, in order or priority.

    1) Increase my monitor refresh rate from 60hz to 85hz (This is what the refresh rate is under windows, on a 19 inch dell p991 at 1600*1200)
    2) Enable 3d acceleration
    3) Enable dual desktops (this would be icing on the cake, but if it won't work, it won't ruin linux for me or anything)

you need the fglrx driver module- i get full acceleration from my 9600pro on 10.1

did you do the download edition or the powerpack?

iirc, the fglrx driver isnt included with the DL edition, but you can get it from the AIT website.

Ok, here's what I tested in the mandrake control center

    -------------------------------------------------
    Graphic Card: ATI Radeon (fglrx)
    Monitor: 1600*1200@ 70hz
    Resolution: 1600*1200 16bpp
    -------------------------------------------------

Here is the error I got

    -------------------------------------------------
    An error occurred:
    Caught signal 11. Server aborting

    Try to change some parameters
    -------------------------------------------------

The driver was in the installation from the beginning.

I'd try over at the rage3d forums, under linux - might get more help there.

rage 3d forums will probably not be able to help.

I know with gentoo you have to install the drivers into the kernel. Have you gone to mandrake's forums? I am sure plenty of people will have had the same problem.

Ati drivers are appalling. Forget any 3dgames using them (dont blame Linux blame ATi on this one). nVidia however have very good linux drivers but just get X working first.

What distro where you trying before you got it over to a friends?

I am also sure that there is more error data above what you posted.
