Hi all, I'm a linux noob and I have just XBMCBuntu which is great except I'm not getting any sound. I have fixed my over scan issue using the nVidia tool which was straight forward enough but I can't find any sort of "control panel" to alter my sound settings. I'm assuming that something is muted as the hardware is all fine. I've googled the problem but nothing I have tried seems to have worked for me. Please help!
Register and ask over at xbmc.org - forum support is huge over there. You can drop the xbmcbuntu into a openbox desktop of some description so someone a little more experience over at xbmc.org might be able to talk you over diagnostics. Also would help you if list details of the hardware your using just in case its a know issue with a specific setup / card etc
Ok well that's probably because your pins(2) for Digital audio on the motherboard needs to be linked to the digital audio pins (2) on the gpu Hope this helps! - it sounds like the issue
Try typing 'alsamixer' in a terminal - make sure that a) the soundcard is recognised and b) the necessary channels are not muted. All control is done through the arrow keys, and there are a few extra commands listed at the top of the screen (like change soundcard - F6 if memory serves me correctly).
Usually would get picked up by bunto. Go sound setting check it going out via HMDI and not via normal audio port
It is hard to give hardware specific advices without knowing your hardware. I would suggest trying OpenELEC as well.
It's a 1.86GHz conroe core 2 due CPU Custom Asus motherboard with on board sound nVidia 520 GFX card 4GB DDR 2 RAM OCZ 60GB SSD I'll give the OpenELEC command a bash too
I went into Alsamixer and unmuted the SPDIF which now gives me the sounds in the skin but when I try and play any music it says unable to initialise audio device. This seems to be a very common problem with this release which is a shame because if it wasnt for this it would be brilliant.
I always use windows and yes it's easier in the sense you can download all the drivers, XBMC and I know how to use it but the linux distro is much faster than windows and I like to tinker
agree'd, xbmcbuntu can be a real headache at times. XBMC is now in the respositories for a really easy install. Edit: LOOK HERE
It definetly needs more work, which is a shame because it is ideal if all you use the pc for is media playback. I've managed to get sound out of the coax into the amp but not out of the hdmi into the tv (it's an old amp without hdmi pass through). If I can get the hdmi to work as well I'll be made up with it. Otherwise I might put a vanilla Ubuntu release on and just install xbmc which isn't quite as slic but should be easier to configure
