Hi, Does anyone know how I could get a Xbox 360 controller to work on a PC running Windows 7 Professional x64. When I plug the controller in, but I can do nothing with it. It is not even recognised as a Game controller, just as an 'Unspecified Device' I have the Xbox 360 controller software and drivers installed. When I press the 'XBox Guide' button on the Controller, all 4 quadrants flash repeatedly. The Xbox software does nothing. I have not paired this controller with my Xbox 360. Any advice would be gratefully received. Thank you.
Are you sure it's an official XBox 360 USB controller? Sure it's not broken? Cause usually all you have to is plug in the controller and you're done, they are known for causing no problems at all. You could also try installing the software.
The OP said he had the drivers and software installed. My brother could not get any of the other brands to work, just the official Microsoft controller.
If its an Official one then yeah this. Thats what I use. If its a non-official do they come with their own drivers perhaps?
The official one should just work, you don't even have to install drivers etc it's just plug and play (literally) even on 64-bit Windows 7. If its wireless I guess that might be different, but it should still work. If it's a third-party one I've no idea, you're probably on dodgy ground there. A lot of companies still have shocking 64-bit driver support.
The wireless is just the same: You plug in the receiver and connect the pads just as on the Xbox. Microsoft's 360 pads are no trouble at all and have a quite high quality, that's why they are arguably the most used controllers on the computer right now. He said he plugged the controller in so I'd guess it's USB. Something's fishy here, Windows 7 is shipped with the drivers. Either the controller is broken, or it's a fake one from ebay or something. BadHead you might not even know, from the outside it might look just the same, but the internals are different. Try connecting it to your Xbox and see if the console will recognize your controller. If yes try a different USB port. If the controller won't work RMA it.
The words "plugged in", assumes its USB. But the word "paired" assumes it is wireless. As I thought you only needed to pair wireless controllers, wired just plug in and go. You are not trying to connect up a wireless controller using a play and charge kit are you? Because that will not work, the play and charge can only charge. Even when you plug it into your xbox, you are still connected to the xbox via wireless. Though when you plug one in, windows does recognise it has a play and charge kit, so it should at the very least be recognised by windows. So maybe I have just assumed wrong If you are in fact wanting to connect a wireless controller up to your PC, you need one of these
+1; I've an official wireless model with the CrossFire dongle-thingy, and have used it and the wired models without problems. I'm inclined to think this isn't a genuine Microsoft product. However, regarding Matticus' comment above - if it's a wireless controller, you NEED the CrossFire thing; the Play & Charge kit won't suffice.
For what it's worth, I have a wired one, installed the software, plugged it in and it worked first time, though it is worth noting that you need to actually use it in a game, you can't use it as a mouse, or at least mine doesn't work like that.
Using them as mice and such isn't standard functionality anyway, you need to get special profiler software for that (there's one really good and rather overpriced one but I can't remember the name of it - anyone?). Trying the controller on a console should be your next course of action. If it doesn't work on either, take it back as faulty.
Glad someone started this topic... Does anyone know if the crossfire dongle supports multiple controllers, or would you need two crossfires (interference?), or would you have to use 1 wireless/1 wired?
Got it to work. I had installed the correct software and drivers, but I was trying to use it via the Play and Charge kit alone - there was no wireless connection. Thanks for the information regarding that Matticus - I did not know that. Given that, I plugged in the Xbox 360 Wirelss receiver into my computer and that fixed it. Ta Thanks for your help.
Yep, four controllers. I've never found PC games I play that have multiplayer functionality, though. Can anyone name any good ones?
THIS Also lego star wars. Those are literally about it though. The PC is officially a terrible platform for co-op multiplayer, nobody makes any games around it. Ever.
Given this has become an Emporium of knowledge about the Xbox 360 Wireless Controller I thought I should post this broken-xbox-360-wireless-receiver-for-windows
