Provided your 17inch LCD has a high enough res then you ought to be able to get any of the HD pictures in the equivilant resolution (I suspect you may be limited to 720p = 1024x720).

Set it to 1280 x 1024 in the dashboard.

Sure, but all the games will run in a window at 1280x720.

17" LCD is fine if you've nothing else, it will be better than a CRT TV no doubt - when I first got my 360 I used a 17" LCD.

I use an acer wdiescreen 19" LCD now, the resolution isn't perfect (scales 1280x768 to 1440x900 native of the display) but it's pretty damn good.

Some games run in 4:3 and some in 16:9 when you use higher 4:3 resolutions. Not sure why that is but it's certainly not all games that do it. Some games will run in 4:3 when set to 4:3 but only at lower resolutions.

Using a proper widescreen monitor is advisable, especially if you want HD seeing as the true HD resolutions are 16:9.
