"We'd go so far as to say that if you are limited to hooking up your 360 via SCART or composite, don't even bother buying it."

I'd agree with you, but you forgot to mention that thats only for lcd users. I'm sure it looks fine via RGB scart on a decent crt.

Nope. Looks no better than the original Xbox - we tried it... the colour bleed etc is awful.

great review. Makes me want one even more :(

Sadly however im limited to scart on my Sony TV though I guess I could go for VGA via my TFT and that would provide a better image (which was the original plan anyway)?

Well I'm certainly not buying one now until I can test the quality on my telly somehow before I part with the cash.

I ain't upgrading my perfectly good CRT for a LONG time.

That's exactly my feelings too - I want to see what it looks like on my Rear Projection TV, as I'm not looking to upgrade that until HDTV is reasonably heavily used across Digital Terrestrial television. The same goes for PS3 too, the one that I'm more likely to buy unless it's really a turd.

You must be mad to pay that much for a console. HDTV is a must before I purchase one, and thats going to be a long time coming. They cost soo much more than standard high quality CRT's. It will be "full" hd tv soon anyway, used to be "buy a tv every 10 years" now its buy one every 3-4 years. :/ sorry for offtopicness.

I have played on them the last couple of weeks and it does look realy impressive on those samsung tv's they have for their displays, we take your advice and wait. Especially to see if the ammount of faulty box's is more than the 3% microsoft claim.

I have heard they run "hot" hows your findings on this. Sorry if you said in article, im at uni and am just having a quick browse

my freind is playing his at work as we speak - no fair I say, fortunately I bought a 32 inch hdtv from samsung - the same one as the demo rigs have so he is forced to come round mine tonight for hours of thrashing ...

personally do I want one? yes I do, even tho I need MCE more at present and I still stick to the mouse n kboard combo on my gaming rig - will they release one for cd 2? I hope so ...

I think this confuses the issue. The SCART connection standard can carry both composite and RGB. If your TV only accepts composite over SCART, then you will have to use the Xbox 360's composite out, and I imagine colour bleed and so forth might be a problem. If, on the other hand, your TV can accept RGB (i.e. component) in either HD or SD over SCART, you could use the Xbox 360's component output and should get equal picture quality to a discreet 3x phono component connection. It is just a different physical connection standard - the signal is identical.

Usually TVs have one RGB SCART and one Composite SCART. If you used a decent quality SCART cable I'm sure you could get pretty good picture quality if you're still subject to only being able to use that.
I wonder how many people who bought Xbox 360s will be plugging them into their composite inputs on their 28" CRT TV? Quite a few I'd imagine seeing as Nintendo stopped supplying consoles with the digital output on the back seeing as 95%+ of its console users used composite. I'd hardly imagine that percentage reversed itself overnight, ESPECIALLY in the UK.

Great article :thumb: So undecided if i want this or the PS3. Sony has been so proprietary recently and the idea of it not being quite so compatible with the rest of my hardware puts me off. You mention in the review that it connects with other systems. I assume this means an MCE pc? Will you be doing any other reviews with a run through about how the 360 interfaces with a pc?

So is composite SCART the three cables (video and two audio) and RGB the 21 pin connector?

I havent had a chance to read the article yet but I had a quick go on one in Game, I played PGR3 for 2 mins and to be honest I thought it looked appauling (in contrast to latest pc titles)...

I need to have a proper look at the thing tomorrow and read the article, but my first impression on the graphics isnt good :sigh:

Its weird, but of reviews of the system i have seen (and the images of the games) i have come to one conclusion. The hardware in the system is one of the best consoles to be released so far (of course) but the games are nothing more than graphical upgrades to there xbox counterparts. However great they may be, you can still get the same or previous game on the xbox (ps2/gamecube) and really doesnt require an upgrade. I really wish they would release some excellent games along with the excellent hardware that were actually new and not just sequals.

However, Geometry Wars looks freaking amazing and i'm glad they are actually adding retro high def games to live.

This things going to die in the Uk if it only looks good on HDTV as there are hardley any hidef tv's in peoples living rooms here as the channles haven't been launched yet :p
Also paying for normal multiplayer. LOL.
    *fires up COD*

I don't know how you can award it an "excelence" award when there are no decent games for it and most people will only get graphics slightly better than an xbox. :duh:
