This sounds like the infamous 'Dirty Lens Error' I would suggest trying a CD/DVD Cleaner first before you rush out and buy anything. If you have to buy, then buy in this order: Samsung, Hitachi, Philips, Thomson I wouldn't suggest buying a PC drive to convert as this can be a little tricky if you don't know how. eBay sell pretty much all the different types of drive, but if you only use your xbox to play xbox games (and official ones of course), then simply buy a Thomson to save yourself about £20.
