I thought they were 40 pin ones. Just going from memory mind you. Any cable should work. Maybe it's something else.
no mate, pin 1 to pin 1 etc. It's a flat cable, you can't really wire them up differently without it being very obvious. At best, it's only going to save you a couple of seconds here and there. If you really want to do it just find a normal ATA66 (80 wire) IDE cable that hasn't had any of the wires snipped.
I tried normal ones, they aren't long enough. But a 20-30% increase in loading times of games I have backed up to my hard-drive from discs I own is great, especially for things like Halo2
