It's a battle of the specs for now, until we actually see some hardware - but that hasn't stopped commentry on the paper warfare, after Xbox2 specs where purportedly leaked. ElReg discuses:

Microsoft's second version of its Xbox console will feature a CPU with PowerPC cores, according to GameSpy, which claims to have scooped the specifications.

Expectations that the console would be formally announced at the Game Developer Conference in San Francisco this week were quashed last month.

Xenon, as it's codenamed, will feature ATI's next-generation graphics card and a 12X dual-layer DVD. The system will also have a camera, to liven up online gaming, while the hard disk is optional.

Sony's third-generation PlayStation will use the 4Ghz Cell processor jointly developed by IBM, Toshiba and Sony's microprocessor division. Sony is expected to unveil the PSP3 in May.

Microsoft's entertainment division turned in its first profit in the most recent quarter, thanks to sales of the game Halo 2 - but executives don't expect it to be consistently profitable until 2007

ElReg was not available to add more, but you could read the original GameSpy report if you can stomach the ad-palooza.

Doing 2 instructions per clock cycle and all 3 sharing 1meg L2 cache and 32/32kb L1 instruction/data cache. I think it would have been better to have 1 processor doing 6 IPC - easier to code for and less problems with cross-cache access between 3 processors, however having 3 FPUs is better for gaming calculations, not that a programmable DX9 500mhz ATI processor wont do that anyway.

It's funny to see that the xbox has moved to memory cards because of the optional (plugin-able?) harddisk. Sony made a SHED LOAD out of official memory cards - £10 for 1meg and £30 for 8meg!! If they are USB compatible (like the controllers of the xbox) then you mebbe able to just use a USB thumb drive if someone develops & sells an adapter?? Thinking out loud here.

As long as it's mod-chip-able then im sold on the Xbox2, otherwise its PS3.

yes there are a few (i think red hat does a ppc distro). I really want to see Cell processors working because the ideas behind it and the theoretical power of them is imense.
