Hi. I have today purchsed an 'Obutto' and x3 22" Dell monitors to sit them on. Now i need a soloution to run these 3 in Eyefinity or the Nvidia. Currently have a 480 with Zalman cooler which takes up 3 slots, so no chance to SLI that. So i am planning to Fleabay the 480 and get somthing thats going to suit. Current budget of £250. Would Xfire bet better?? 6850's or 6870's? Or maybe SLI ... or maybe a 6970 .... You see, this is buzzing around in my head. I would like to hear from anyone with some experience using 3 monitors (max res 5040x1050) Only looking to play racing sims etc etc not trying to set a new FPS record for BF3. All suggestions welcomed
As I have slowly accepted with my large res single screen; the more VRAM the better. I would say a minimum of 2GB for that resolution but more than that preferably. Does your budget include the sale of the 480?
Well I have a 6870 2gb in a work computer driving four 1080p monitors (7680x1080), and it plays driving sims fairly well(can't recall which ones atm, set it up a while ago, and I don't work the software on it.) I'd suggest a 6970 for your case, as you'll probably require more than medium graphics from your race games.
Surely the newly reviewed 7870 would fit the bill best - 2GB VRAM, and faster than a 6970, and getting on for GTX580 speeds - IE a bit faster than your GTX480, but cool and quiet too, plus low power consumption and good overclocking headroom.
I thought reviews suggest that they aren't out for a while. On the sli vs xfire side though, I'm sure I've seen reports that microstuttering is more prevalent on amd cards. But otherwise I have no experience to speak of.
Yep if you can manage to wait a couple of weeks this is probably by far the best solution, otherwise something like SLI GTX 560 2GBs for £320 or so if you can stretch the budget a little.
I think i will able to hang it out as long as the obutto takes to be delivered tbh. And yes that budget does include the sale of the 480 ( or recouping some costs ) Might be able to stretch a little further. The 6970 is within budget at around the £250 mark, but for the same money i can go 6870 xfire which will (from what i read anyway) slaughter the 6970 when it scales ok. If it doesnt is the 6870 really that far behind a 6970?? Tbf i dont much play anything else other then Rfactor,GTR2 etc Might dabble is some Quake Live on occasion. Stull undecided of what to do. Much appriciated comments chaps, keep em coming please. EDIT* According to this anyway the new 7870 is more of a sidestep from the 6970 rather than an upgrade. Not sure its worth hanging out for,or paying the extra asking price. http://www.techradar.com/reviews/pc...s/amd-radeon-hd-7870-1068461/review?artc_pg=4
With that resolution, you will want minimum 1.5GB of RAM for any level of longevity, preferably 2GB. If you accept that, then you won't afford 2x cards for that budget. Following from that, only AMD cards will happily play 3xscreens off one card (barring a couple of oddities). Just go for the fastest AMD card you can afford, with 2GB RAM or more. The 6970 fits the bill.
