OK.. so i re-installed XP on this puter when i upgraded everything... and now I can't see any of my networked computers from this computer (shared folders etc..), but my shared files can be viewed from the other computers on the network... I've looked over everything, and am just confused now...

I was talking to Dakkon, and he said he had the same problem, but he had to re-install windows to fix it, but I know there has to be an easier solution... any ideas anyone?

If you can't browse the shares on net neighbourhood can you type in the name i.e computer1 on a browser \\computer1\sharename ? or by the ip \\192.168.0.1 or whatever the ip of the computer you want to see?
Probably the quickest way to fix the problem is to install netbios on the XP machine, also make sure no firewalls are blocking it.

The dedicated workgroup you said earlier FNG... How'd you set that up, and how would that make it work?

when i set up my network in xp no other machines are in that workgroup and then when i want to access the other computers i just browse the entire network for the computer im looking for. At least xp is kind enough to remember the networkplaces that you have been so after accessing another workgroup and/or computer once theres a shortcut that works. All of my other machines are in thier workgroup and they work fine and can still easily access my xp machine. Its a work around but since my xp machine is a laptop and mobile and i can still use my network it works for me. Hopefully the netbios works. The problem saddly seems to be xps inability to talk with computers in its own workgroup (especially older windows systems). If you have pro you could set up a domain that might work. Hope some of this explains what I did.

ok a workgroup is kind of like a family of computers so all computers on the same workgroup will be able to browse each others shared folders and if they are on a different workgroup they can not see shared folders but will be able to ping each other.

To change workgroup go to system properties\computer name\change then change the workgroup so all the computers are the same

um andy i was explaining what I did because when they are all in the same workgroup my XP machine freaks out and does not work. I know that having my xpmachine as it is is not the standard way of networking but XP is broke.

Also you can still access shared folders that are on a diffrent workgroup machine. infact if your running nt or 2k the entire c: is always shared. very unsecure. go figure windows.

    well anywase....

I tried pinging this machine from the other puters, and then i pinged the other puter with this machine... both went through... checked all my firewall info (internal windows XP firewall), and everything there is off...

Still able to acess this puter from other puters on network, and nothing when it comes to me seeing the other files / printer / etc...

That just sounds like you are not sharing any folders. If you are then it’s just another Microsoft product being mean and working when it likes
