After reformatting my brother's computer I remembered that their COA sticker is AWOL (3 kids' feet on computer case, COA on top of case...). Any way, I found this with Google Shopping:
http://www.google.co.uk/products/catalog?q=windows+xp+pro&hl=en&cid=14488037895498207822&sa=title#p. From the description I gather that it's the media (CD) with an academic volume license. Is that any good? I'm not worried about the media or the "academic" side of the license - their son is at uni and the other two are nearing school leaving/college entering age.

So to make things short I need some info about MS volume licensing. £9.27 seems a bit too cheap to be true - I reckon for that price it's media only with your own volume license.

    It's just the VL disk.
You'd need to buy a VL to go with it (minimum order 5 licences)

If they need a new OS and there son is at Uni they could take advantage of the Windows 7 £30 deal thats being discussed in the following thread, I would imagine they would need the original key though if it is an upgrade version as people seem to think it is.

    Windows 7 for £30

May or may not be of any use :)

Thanks for the replies. I got confirmation from the shop that's it's only the media, no license included. Thanks for the link, CrapBag.
