right, had an issue with windows last night which seems to be some sort of registry corruption. it rebooted, took an age to boot into windows, and when it did, a dialog box came up saying that the registry had corrupted and had been successfully restored. however, every boot since has been painfully slow, and i have been unable to see the task bar. also, the majority of my programs are not working, including stuff like system restore. i did a chckdsk /r using the recovery console on my XP disk to no effect, so any other help would be greatly appreciated guys. a format is the very last thing i am wanting to do.
your hdd is probably silently failing. they can do that sometimes. did chkdsk report any corrupt files?
well its a brand new hard disk, less than a month old, and i havent had a single problem until the PC rebooted halfway through a windows update at the same time as another program crashed, all at the same time as i was running benchmarking software. so im guessing the hard disk isnt the issue. im reverting the reg back to the virgin install reg, and gonna see where i can go from there.
right, well i got it fixed!! i used an awesome guide i found that i think everyone should be made aware of which is here: http://www.aade.com/XPhint/XPrecovery.htm seriously, i was cacking my proverbials when this happened last night
I think maybe on reflection you could see the possible conflict with the actions carried out by yourself. I would not recommend running benchmarking software and a windows update at the same time! Sorry for your troubles however and glad to hear you got it sorted!
well, i didnt actaully realise that i had a windows update even running at the same time as i benchmarking my hard disk. for some reason, my install of XP pro seems to run it totally in the background without any dialogue boxes/ tooltips in the toolbar, so i was unaware.
