Quite a while since I have used this install disk but its a pre SP1 disc, my other two copies of XP came with either SP1 or SP2 combined with it.

So do I need to install SP1 or can I just go straight to SP3, I have proper install discs for SP2 and SP3 but can't find my SP1 disc nor a download from MS.

It will get upgraded to Win 7 when funds allow.

Service pack 3 includes all the previous fixes etc. contained in service packs 1 & 2, so just go straight with the SP3 install, there are a few additional updates after SP3.

The cover disc of PC Pro magazine has an editorial on it for creating your own SP3 disc.

In addition, there are numerous articles on the web regarding "slipstreaming" where you build your own bootable XP CD with SP3 already on it - that way you can install and add the service pack in fewer steps. Google "XP SP slipstream".

This article by Paul Thurrott is a good one: http://www.winsupersite.com/xp/sp3_slipstream.asp.

    Understatement of the year...:D

For windows XP, Slipstream installs have got to be considered a must.... A fresh install with all updates, drivers pre installed for you.

Speaking of which has anyone managed a slipstreamed windows 7 install yet?

A vanilla XP install connected to the net is infected with the blaster virus within seconds btw, just to warn you.

I recently installed XP on a pc, and never had a problem. However, after I installed XP, I installed AVG, first thing after I got on the internet, before any patches, etc.
