Everytime I install SP2 onto Win XP Pro after the restart, I log on, and as soon as it displays the desktop it crashes giving me a BSD telling me there a prob with win32 something or other then the blurb about restart your PG if this happens again contact administrator etc, with the physical memory dump at the bottom.

Now i've tryed the verion of SP" I recived with PCGamer, and also the offical windows update one. This is all after giving the PC a spring clean.

What i've had to do is start up in Safe Mode, which it doesnt always allow, and uninstall SP2. But I would like to have it successfully installed, so... any ideas?

    Call us: 0845 090 2025

alternately, boot into safe mode with command prompt, go to C:\WINDOWS\$NTServicePackUninstall$\spuninst\spuninst.exe to uninstall SP2, go to www.microsoft.com/downloads and get the version for IT Pros & developers, download it to your desktop, disconnect your PC from the net (physically), disable your AV and Firewall, remove all peripherals, double click the *.exe and install anew.

SP2 is great, all issues are solvable and we get about 2 calls a day. Either you're all to geeky and withdrawn to actually ask for help or all of these 'issues' don't actually exist.

PS: both of those calls each day are down to third party software.

The Windows update version looks at your PC and only d/ls what it thinks you need - the full d/l gives you EVERYTHING.

    Wouldn't let you download what?

Had you set the program in the firewall exceptions?

It installed just fine on my very tweaked machine, with USB keyboard and mouse and pretty much nothing standard. Also installed fine on my parents reasonable-standard PC, and my dad's very standard work PC.

Then I get to my sister's computer. Pretty standard, but I don't know *what* she does to that computer. Installed SP2 on it and I just refuses to boot. Only way to get to it work at all is a repair installation. I'm still emailing MS trying to get a fix - thankfully they're providing free email support for all SP2 issues. Otherwise I'd probably just nuke the damm thing.

what about the long list of programs that dont work afterwards?
just because i know how to disable services and fiddle around with my registry allowing me to get past all the bs in sp2, doesnt mean everyone else does...so for the greater population it doesnt actually help that much....

You do know that list is 'possible conflicts' and 90% of the software on there has a patch don't you?

to true...my main issue is that i get to go through code that worked (compiled/ran) fine on sp1a but now refuses to on sp2...but then again im not a big winblows fan, so dont expect much enthusiam out of me...

i guess all in all it aint too bad, and that for most people the "security centre" will do more good then harm, i just think they have done a piss poor job, and for people like moi its just hassle that i dont need, in trying to get rid of their firewall and other silly services they have added...dont get me wrong the whole windows update, service packs, security centre are all great ideas, and im sure theres more good then bad, but for me they just cause grief as i think the implementation is not undertaken correctly, the code not tested enough, and releasing it to the public came in little drops n drabs....that just my opinion though, as im sure working in IT properly you get a much better idea of how it works/doesnt for most people....

Not a fan of SP2 here, installed the network install to a production machine (luckily freshly ghosted), totally hosed the system. Constant BSODs. Went back to 1a with that one.

Did a fresh install on a basic test box, no extra devices, no firewalls, no a/v.. Worked okay for about a day, and now the infamous BSOD.. Seems to be all memory pool header errors.. (all equipment in this box is known-good).

I'm just going to quietly wait for 2a to come.. Anyone remember the NT days and the h**l that was unleashed with SP6, then SP6a came out? :)

    That will be $.02 now.
