Hey guys/gals maybe someone can help lil ol me,
I have just rebuilt a shuttle and a laptop both of which have a clean install of xp sp2, however when I run windows updater and collect all 32 critical patches both systems wont boot, they will get to the logo splash/loading screen then just at the last second before the cursor should appear they both shut down and reboot
Has anyone got any useful ideas I was thinking of doing the updates one at a time will this help ??
Could it be a conflict with one or more of the updates ??
When I let windows run its own updater (on sp2) the systems still crash after it downloads updates...
At first I thought it was a driver or software conflict so I just loaded xp plus sp2 then hooked the laptop direct to the net and downloaded the patches when I rebooted it crashed
    Cheers

Are the two clean installs of XP from the same CD?

I would clean install and run windows update installing/rebooting one at a time until you find the update that is causing you problems

I don't know what type of license you're using with that disc, but Windows Update could be under the impression that you're abusing the licensing agreement and it's shutting you down.

The same thing happened when I put SP2 on my brother-in-law's computer. We found out that his copy was...less than legitimate.

You're allowed to install the same CD of MS Office XP on 2 machines, say your main box and your laptop, but not MS XP the OS. 1 CD = 1 Activation = 1 system at any 1 time.

I didn't know that. Is it the same for all suites of MS Office, like 2003? What if it came with your system (OEM license)?

I know, I could just read the licensing agreement. But your English version of the Legalese is so much simpler!

    From http://www.cpearson.com/excel/EULAFAQ.htm.
Legally, applies to any Office AFAIK, though in practical terms, products that need activation will be most obviously affected.

Ok the disk is xp pro with a business licence for multiple installation it is legit
Also I found it is update number 16 on my list of 31 critical updates I will try to find out the number on the update but it is 6.20mb I am going to try exclude this from the list and see if all the others install if not then I will go back through the list and see which of the others make the systems crash

If that doesn't work, then you may need to call MS. I was intalling an Action Pack license of Visio Pro 2003 on a user's laptop yesterday, and it wouldn't let me activate it, even with the automated tool on the phone. It said we had exceeded our available licenses, which I knew for a fact was not the case, as this was install #5 out of our 10 available. They patched me through to a rep. All he needed to hear were the words 'Action Pack' (business license), and he had an activation number for me.

It could be that this has nothing to do with your problem, but with a clean and legitimate install, this sounds like the closest thing to me. The symptoms match exactly with what I described earlier.

Let us know if excluding that update fixes the problem.

Are you asking or telling? If you're telling, I'm glad it's sorted.
