hey, i've been lookin @ ppls desktops in one of the other threads and notices some really wicked lookin XP desktops.... where do you download these themes/desktop things from for XP? and how do u install them ? thanks in advance
You have to pay for Visual Styles (Style XP). You can use Visual Styles for free by patching your Windows XP UXTheme.dll Check out NEOWIN For the help on patching, and they provide the program to do it (their forums rock for customizing windows!) Also, check out Deviant Art in their "Skins and Themes" galleries. Stardock has a lot of stuff like WindowsBlinds, StyleXP, Desktop X, and others, ether free or shareware. Some people use either, Litestep, Hoverdesk, Aston, there are tons of stuff out there, just Google either 'Windows Skins' or 'Shell replacement'
If you want to use unsigned themes with XP, This may be worth a look: http://www.windowsx.org/enhance/index.html Lets you use any theme you like. There are loads of them out there. Beats paying through the nose for !Plus, which doesn't actually have any really good themes anyway, and still doesn't let you use unsigned themes... EDIT: The link you need is at the Bottom of the page I linked to above.
hi me again i download both the file changer and windowblinds ... now the after i did the file change windows popped up and said a file had been changed and it need to be re-installed i said canceal thinkin it was the file changer (was i rite?) anywayz i went to www.themexp.org download a load of themes and windows wont allow me to use them...problem 1 problem2 is that i installed windowblinds and it works brilliantly....with the built in themes it came with but all the themes i have it says arnt windowblind themes and cannot be used...so where can i get themes window blind themes ??? thanks again sorry for the n00b q's
I know after you apply the VS patch, you have to reboot. If you apply the patch, after it is already patched, you will uninstall it. Just try this, if it doesn't work, try installing the patch again: To use a Visual Style with your patched UXTheme.dll do this: Open the VS into a folder. Look for a .dll file that should be associated with Visual Styles and double-click it. It looks like this on my system. It should automatically bring you into your Display properties, and you can take it from there. I hope that solves problem 1. Problem 2, windowsblinds themes (I'm assuming WindowsBlinds XP) try: here, here, or here. Remember that windowblinds skins won't work with StyleXP/Visual Style skins and vice versa. Hope this helps!
