Currently on XP 32 Bit, got the system all up and running nicely, and now want to go to W7 RC1. Can i upgrade to Vista without a Product Key, then upgrade to W7 64 Bit? and Keep Steam, Games etc?
Can't you install W7 over XP? Why don't you backup the steam games and then reinstall, saves downloading again
It won't work as good as you may think. The drivers for XP are a bit different than those for Vista/win7. The same goes for programs, since vista/win7 have a ever so slightly different file structure. It's easier to just reinstall. Backup + reinstall shouldn't take you much longer than a couple of hours tops.
Look on the internet for each game where they save the game saved games. The problem is with XP complete lack of folder organization, developers just through them anywhere. In Vista/Win7 you have a nice folder called Saved Game in your profile folder (see how nice it is organized), but sadly gamer developers are too busy jacking off and still do their own way. If the game has Windows Live, then I THINK the saved game is saved online. So when you re-install the game and log back in, it should download your save game. However, if you created a offline account, then you are screwed, because the saved games are encrypted and locked down to your system, so if you re-install the game or XP, then you permanently lose your saved game. See how Microsoft is divided in their ideas form each department. As for Steam, you right click on your game launcher within Steam and select backup game. I don't know how to restore the game and how it works exactly.
Ok , I have W7 on my MacBook pro, I will investigate restoring games from steam backup tomorrow, I know DOW2 and COD4 I had to copy some files over, aswell as GTA3, but those were the only games I had save data for.
Nope. I still can't figure out what the point of GFWL actually do. It sure as hell doesn't save anything... Anyway, to transport the savegames for GTA IV you just go to C:\Users\<user name>\AppData\Local\Rockstar Games\GTA IV\savegames The "AppData" folder is hidden. Just copy the contents in the "savegames" folder to a temporary folder. Then you start a new game in your new installation (Go far enough that you start driving a car). Quit the game, and replace the new savegame files with the old ones. I have done this a couple of times, and it works just fine.
Spam LOL. and, close thread, im typing this on Windows 7, biggest hassle was getting all the steam games to work, but they do now ^^
figured i would just hijack this thread instead of starting a new one. see how it works... i play l4d, so what issues did you have getting it to work? what did you do to fix? did you make a driver cd to use after the install of windows 7?
