Well heres the story. I built a computer for my uncle in july this year and installed all the basic programs for spyware, viruses, ect. Well appariantly he can not update windows because of his connection. He has dialup with only 12hr a week online (his company provides it). He also lives in an area that does not recieve broadband which he wants. Well windows update takes way to long to download the updates. Well he got a virus though internet explorer and i did everything i could to get rid of it but to no avial (infected 20000+ files when i got to it :eeek: ) Well i backed up all his important files and scaned them and they were clean, thank god. Well its in the process of a reformat and im wondering is there a way for him to recieve updates via cd in snailmail or something. Im going to install mozilla so they wont use internet explorer anymore. im also going to install SP2 on it for additional safety. But that wont do anygood if he cant update it.

This is just a pain in the neck. :duh: :sigh: Help!

    Remove unneeded Network protocols/services.
    Disable useless/dangerous Windows Services.
Create a limited (no Administrative rights) account for users.
    Enable firewall (Windows or third-party).
Use Mozilla only (even for mail). If using MS Outlook, switch to text only, no preview pane.
Install good antivirus, and keep it updated.
    Disable Windows Automatic Updates.
Periodically (once a month or so) check for updates:
    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/CurrentDL.aspx
... download files (critical updates ONLY!) manually, and double-click to install them.

Please see the link below for more details.

    Good Luck. :thumb:

You clearly behind a decent firewall then arent you :thumb:

Oh and if you install SP2 (which is available via cd :thumb: ) it includes all previous updates, so there will only be a few new ones to download instead of sh*tloads :hehe:

You could just buy one of the large PC Mags, a lot of them are coming bundled with an SP2 CD.
