Right I've got an annoying problem.

This morning I fired up the mighty beast as usual after clicking on my user profile (something it started asking me to do only recently which is also irritating) it went to my desktop, that was it, just the picture. None of the icons appear the taskbar doesn't appear, it doesn't respond to ctrl+alt+ del, nothing.

So I restarted and booted to safe mode. Which was fine. Next stop, disabled all non-essential startup programs, all thats left running is antivirus, firewall and video driver. Reboot....

    ...Nothing.

I hope you enjoyed this tale. Please help.

    Specs:
    CPU - AMD X2 4200+ s939 @ 2.85ghz
    MOBO - Asus A8NSLi
    RAM - 2GB Corsair DDR400 2-3-3-6
    GPU - 8800GTS 512
    OS - Windows XP 32bit
    Other - 650w PSU, 640Gb HDD (2 partitions), DVD-RW

Anybody? Just had another crack at it and it booted first time (the clue is if it's not going to work is you don't get the startup tune) but the internet wouldn't work and the system just felt a bit sluggish.

So I restarted and was again left staring at a picture of my snowy garden.

I'm getting really fecked off now and considering just doing a repair install of XP over the top in case a system file got borked

So judging by what others have said around the web this may be some sort of virus, possibly one called the vundo virus.
its recomended that i run superantispyware however i cant get it to install in safe mode, which it the only usable way the machine will boot.

    any ideas?

get an ubuntu live CD, boot into the Live mode, install ClamAV, update the definitions, then scan your computer

thats the general steps, if you've never used a live cd or you're lost somewhere just ask about the parts you're stuck on and i'll help you out more

I've got the live CD up and running and I know this is probably a daft question but how do I get this clam AV to install. Some websites say it's already in ubuntu but you need to do something or other.

    Sorry linux noob

more than likely it's just scanning the files in the root of C:. look in the preferences and make sure it's scanning recursively

basically, what it's doing now is scanning the contents of what you would call C: in windows (it's prolly mounted somewhere like /media/disk right now, but i'm going to refer to whatever location it's mounted as as C:). but you see, there is a difference between scanning the files in that directory; and scanning the files in that directory, and the files in the folders in that directory, and the files in the folders in that directory, and so on and so forth.

don't forget to update your virus definitions list before scanning

ps, you can edit posts so you don't have 5 in a row

.:EDIT:. i annotate it like this so people know there's been an update

I have fixed many , many windowses by running a chkdsk /r in the recovery console

try it, it can't make your situation any worse
