Welcome to the cult of Canon. Any Deviation from the One True Path will be punished. I wish I could afford a 1DS... MMmm....11 Megapixels, world's fastest AF, water/dust sealed, solid magnesium alloy body.... Someone give me £7000!
IsaacSibson, my father in law (pro photographer) just bought a pair of 'em He had all canon equipment before, he looked at the equivilent Nikon, but the cost of new lenses would be prohibitive. rather nice
Isn't there another digital EOS with 1600x1200, and 8fps shooting (for sports photographers etc) Gotta love 11megapixels though just in case you're wondering, that's 4064x2704 pixels to be precise And essjaytee, I also know a pro photographer with one of them (but only one )
No. It's 2464 x 1648 (4 megapixel). And I also know a pro photog, who has a 1D (the 8fps 4MP) and getting a 1DS. Nice.... For now though I shall stick with my EOS 3.
dude 11 megpix is dead the 14n will have 14 megapixels and will slam out for about half the price of the cannon 11 megapix camer. here is a link http://www.kodak.com/global/en/professional/products/cameras/dcsPro14n/dcsPro14nIndex.jhtml note the relase price of ~3000 pounds
Actually, the kodak is more like £5000, and has many problems: 1) lack of AA filter 2) poor metering and AF systems inherited from the Nikon F80 on which it is based 3) Lack of weather and dust sealing 4) High image noise levels 5) All usual limitations of Nikon F mount and major lens compatibility issues of the F80. 6) It is ugly as sin. 7) Unexcusably poor frame-rate (rated 1.7, delivers 1.0 in the field. The 1DS delivers 3 FPS and the 1D 8FPS) 8) lack of durability- rated 30000 shutter cycles compared to the EOS 1Ds' conservatively rated 150000 9) Smaller imager pixel size- lower sensitivity 10) pathetic 1/125th flash sync (compared to 1/250th X-sync and 1/8000th FP-Sync on the 1DS) 11) Shutter lag (100ms compared to 55ms, and believe me, this is a seriously noticeable difference) The Kodak is not aimed at nor does it compete with the EOS 1DS. The Kodak competes with the Fuji S2, Nikon D100 and Canon D60 cameras in the consumer market. Megapixels is not everything...witness the crushing superiority of the 4 megapixel EOS 1D over the 6 Megapixel D60, or 5 megapixel Nikon Coolpix 5700 for example....
ok ok ok, but how many pro-consumers use all of those functions, and how many normal people would even notice the problem, also if you already have a bunch of lenses for the f-mount system, i think this is a good camera to get in to the high end digital camers with out too much outlay of cash, but this is just my 2 cents (again)
How many consumers are going to lay down £5000 on an SLR body with no lenses? Let's see anyway... I use an EOS 3, and one reason that I've not even looked at the D60 is the AF, which is similar to the DCS14n's AF. The EOS 3/1v/1d/1ds AF system is light years ahead, and is something I (and many others) rely on greatly. Everyone uses an AA filter because it's part of the imaging system. Without it you're going to be looking at jaggies on diagonal edges and curves, and since an AA filter for this size frame accounts for well over $1000 of cost, the Kodak is really not looking like such a bargain. Shutter lag is a major issue. Ask anyone who has used a camera of around 100ms for a long time and then switched to a faster camera. I found it an amazing improvement when I switched from EOS 5 to EOS 3. 1/125th X sync is absolutely pathetic. Even the D60 has 1/200th, and there appears to be no high-speed Focal-Plane flash sync available on the DCS 14n. So if you have F mount lenses then the DCS14n is a reasonable alternative to the D100 and S2, but to suggest that it is better than the EOS 1DS is way off the mark because you've looked at only a single headline figure.
yeah, that's why I always buy canon as well, all the little numbers that i know nothing about (but you probably do) but are better than the competitors' cameras, even if it's to the expense of a few pixels of resolution
