Well just went out and brought my first car, was looking for something reliable and a bit nippy if possible...

Managed to get my hands on a P reg (54000 miles) Nissan Micra 1.3 (think its an injection not sure) SR :D

Comes with Power steering, Disk brakes all round, central locking, alloy wheels, spoiler, electric windows, electric mirrors, sunroof, 3 months tax and 3 months RAC Warranty in metallic green and speakers on the parcel shelf for £2175 from my local garage, managed to get a discount and to get a full 12 month MOT and the tyres replaced for new ones if not already new :D

First thoughts were its a girly colour, but it drives/handles really nice, and seems ok for a new car and got this for it too

    http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/pro...=3199&osCsid=309953633ff9661991adc207f1b85633

Cheapest insurance I can find for it (18 0 year full license 0 year no claims) is like £1605 though :(

picking it up on tuesday after its MOT :D so happy, who else has Micra's on the forum, they good reliable cars/what mpg etc

Congrats with your new car. Sorry for going a bit o/t, but what does P-reg actually mean? I've wondered about you british people and all your [insert letter here]-reg cars...

P reg means it was made in 1997, they used to be a diff reg each 6 months (some letters not used like Q etc) then it changed to a diff letter each year (obv the alphabet going upwards) and then it went to a new system that I dont get at all, like 52 53 etc, but I aint got the hang of that yet..

    what do americans use?

I have a Micra and I love it, mine is a GX Automatic 1.3i.

Looking at getting rid soon though and getting a bigger car like an Astra or something, it does drive absolutely fantastically though.

The new system is very easy to use in my opinion...

all registrations in the first 6months of the year is indicated by 0.. all in the second indicated by 5... the year is indicated by the second digit... eg 3 for 2003...

    examples:
    February 2004 = 04
    August 2003 = 53
    September 2004 = 54

(and incase you had wondered what would happen when we get to 2010, 2011, 2012 etc... well they have thaught of this you see! first half is denoted by 1x [eg April 2010 = 10, March 2015 = 15] second half, by 6 [eg, August 2013 = 63] and the year is still indicated by the last digit of the year.. and each decade that passes... the leading number increases... 201x = 1x/6x, 202x = 2x/7x, 203x = 3x/8x, 204x = 4x/9x... so the system holds good until 2049.... by then cars probably won't exist and we'll have cool floating things like in the fifth element!)

    I still think it's easier to say it's a '90 Bronco with a 351...

But then we only have car releases once a year (in the fall the models for the next year come out, so a '90 Bronco COULD'VE been bought in late '89, but mine was built in March of 90 :D )

But don't we have 2 'releases' of cars each year, like models released in spring/autumn etc...

TBF does it matter that much about registrations, not really important, your car ownership document states what year the car was made, so all its there for is to give people looking at your car in the street a rough guide, and even then if you have a custom license plate then that voids the whole idea of it all anyways...

The whole reason they changed the registration system was because of the car manufacturers.

They suffered in the later stages of the year, because people would hang on and wait until the new plates came out, so they could show off their spangly new "Whatever"-reg car.
So they changed the system so that it's not immediately noticeable how new your car is, and also there are new plates every 6 months, thus getting rid of the "dead spot" in the market.
