http://www.bit-tech.net/article/59/ I think you might want to look at that. If the bunch of wire has no power cables connected to it, then you can simply cut it and put heat shrink tubing around the end.
ahhh good mod... i just did mine "almost" the same way.. only mine is a acrylic stand and lighed by series of LEDs. looks good! i personally like the LEDs Deeep blue look tho
