Well I have been working on this for a little while now and sadly I never started a project log like i wanted.

Any who i am taking a 20mm ammo can and fitting in a full pc, water cooled and all. I have it most of the way done now and the rest is mostly just cosmetics. My main problem right now is how to make the hole for the cdrom and still have it look "military".

    the pics

    http://www.lanslaughter.com/mine/20mm/front.jpg
    http://www.lanslaughter.com/mine/20mm/inside.jpg
    http://www.lanslaughter.com/mine/20mm/together.jpg

I cannot decide on weather or not i want to cut a hole the size of the drive or one just large enough for the tray. My main problem is trying to figure out how to "decorate" it once i have made the hole. Any ideas?

Edit: changed the title to turn this into a showing of my mod i guess. I still would love to hear ideas though please.

Stealthing it is what i was implying on doing. Sorry if the question wasn't more clear.

What i could not decide is if i should just make a stealth slot for the tray or stealth the whole drive front it self. Though i think now i will just have the tray stealthed. I will no doubt post picture of this when i am finished.

It kinda sucks though, i searched google prior to starting this project to see if this has been done before and the only things i found were zapwizards mod and another that just stuck the case backwards in therough the opening. I now see that a few others have used 20mm (or 7.62mm linked in this case) ammo cans for cases. Oh well, no two are alike eh? :)

Im getting a slotload for my mod so that all that will be visable is a thin line in the perspex.

    thank you ychamp.

The main problem i have having right now is the "theme" i have every thing set on the inside to a removable frame so that its easy to work on if i need to do so. I also tried to make sure that if need arise, I can continue using this case when i upgrade the compnonents in side (one thing that i don't think most modders take into account). only down side is where i had to put the cd-rom drive.

the other slight problem is having to put the 120mm top exauste fan on the out side of the case (though once i paint the case black as i plan to do, it shouldn't look to bad)

As it stands right now i have 4 toggle switches for each of the 4 fans in side (12v/7v mod possibly) but im not to sure if i will need them. i also have 4 push buttons and i was planning on using those for power, reset, cd eject, and a cmos clear (was hoping to make that some what like whats on the fatality drive bay). also leds for power, hdd, cd acivity, and possibly lan. but i have run into a snag i think. where to put all the decrotive/functional items and still have a "theme" to it. if you looked at the pics, you will see that i do not have much room behind the front panel (the space in the bottom has the hdd rack and pump) and i don't think i can put them on the top because i still want to be able to have the frame slide in and out (same reason i put the top 120mm on the out side).

I will post some pics here in a few and maybe you guys could throw some ideas or sketches.

    OK, here are the pics

The front with the lid on
    [IMG]

    The back (frame out)

    Top
    [IMG]

Inside can (boring pic i know)

    Different angles of the frame
    [IMG]

Why I hate where i had to put the cd-rom drive
From under (i will be covering the top of that cap though surprisingly the drive isn't touching it)

    From top
    [IMG]

    Bracket for rear 80mm fans
    [IMG]

My first time welding (arch welding no less) so naturally it sucks, but it holds!

The buttons and switches i have (I have 4 toggles and 4 push Buttons, only 1 of each are shown of course)

I also have a fan shroud that i am working on that will hold 2 120mm fans behind the radiators and pull air through them. With the ventalation i have in the back and top, it should not allow any warm are to linger.

Comments, and ideas definatly most welcome.

    Asus P4P800SE
    p4 3.0 prescott (not OC'd yet)
    Leadtek GeforceFX 6600(also not OC'd)
1gb duel channel Corsair (not sure of timings)
    1x raptor 36gb system
    1x wd 120gb
    1x wd 200gb
    Dvd/rw drive
    550W power supply
Thermal take bigwater Kit (have two radiators because thier first rev of the kit had a poorly manufactured cpu block and it cracked on me so i bought a second kit)
Thermal take Gpu block as well
3x Scythe Kama Flow 56.3 1800 rpm 120mm Fans (sa 1225fdb12m love these, mass amounts of air, VERY little noise)
2x Panaflo 80mm (don't know specs, though i suspect these will be the cause of any noise)

hmmm don't think i missed any thing heh, but you can see why i kept in mind the upgradeability aspect :)

Considering your problems go for a laptot/slim optical drive.
Have you looked at the army related cases on this site?

i'de like to do an ammo tin case but theyre so damn expensive, i thought the point of army disposals was being cheap? its like 50 bucks for an ammo tin big enough to build a case in- bah.

anyway, with that case, looks very good so far- i'de just consider making a shroud for that blowhole fan, will look far better, even if you're considering painting it
the removable frame is a good idea, but how does is it secured to the outside?

Lucky for me I work AMMO in the USAF (look it up :D ) so I am able to get one of almost any size. I have 2 of the 20mm size (the one i am working with), two smaller size (same size used on the itx website) and one smaller than that. They get bent up and sent back to be melted down and reused quite frequently.

Thank you for the complement. It kinda started one night when my work mate and i were bored, looked over at a can of that size and said "Wonder if you could build a computer case in there?" I have taken a look at a few (though i kinda wish i knew about thise mod being done before) of the other ammo can mods here, and while they aren't bad at all, I like my design for the simple fact that i don't like wires coming out of the "front" of my cases. As for the frame, its made to almost the exact dimentions of the inside of the can and the lid has a thick rubber seal on the under side of it. So basically when the lid is on, it holds the frame snug and very secure. As for the shroud, could you explain better how you mean? I am very open to ideas and changing what i can if its for the better, I hate working on mods by myself, i tend to get "artists" block quite a bit.

Btw, any one else think i ramble on a bit?

That particular can once had 1500 7.62mm 9/1 linked ammunition (9/1 = every 10th round is a tracer). The same can is also used for 20mm linkless rounds. (20mm used on most combat air craft, F-15, F16, F-22, etc)

First off, if this is getting to the point to where i need to move this to the project logs thread please some one let me know.

Just wanted to show that i did a dry run of the wireing to get a feel on how much space i have and i have a few questions if some one could help.

The main jist of what i will end up with
    [IMG]

couple things, there will be a different video card and try to picture tubes going from radiators to CPU, GPU, and pump.

Now for the question, these pics are showing where i have the most space in behind the front cover. One shows without the pump and the other with.

I am not opposed to moving the pump, but for some reason i get this feeling that this might be the best place for it. But this is the "panel" that i had in mind and it could possibly go in the bottom right hand corner of the last pic.

In order from top left and going counter clock wise:

    Power
    dvd/rw eject
    pwr light
    hdd activity
    dvd activity
cmos clear (wanting to fabricate some sort of "Emergancy use only" type cover)
    possible 7v/12v mod for fans

I would like it resessed but not enough room. Any who I'm going nuts :wallbash: trying to come up with an alternative route. Any ideas? (pretty please? :worried:
