Hi guys, after many dedicated years of service (about 8), my trusty old P4e system has finally died so now im building a new system around the i5 2500k, here are my components, any glaringly bad choices? Improvements etc? I'll be using it for everything, its the only entertainment while I'm at naval college so, gaming, playing music watching films and doing work. So it has to be powerful, quiet and ideally light as i'll ve moving a lot. CPU: Intel i5 2500k MOBO: Asus maximus gene-z PSU: 650w ocz zt 80+ HS: thermaltake frio (already bought) MEM: 4GB corsair dominator 1600MHz (already bough) GFX: cousins hand-me-down 480gtx Case: fractal design R3 Monitor: 22" samsung S22A00B Speakers i'll be using my old creative 5.1 system, its shite but does the job. Price for all this is about 550 pounds from aria, how does it look? Cheers guys
Lol im gonna guess by the severe lack of replies thats there's nothing majorly wrong with the build. I'll buy the components when I go home next weekend then. Cheers longweight
Is that a reference GTX 480? If so you are aware of its heat issues? I have a 580 in a fractal and have done quite a bit to tame it and I think the 480 is a bit worse. Aside from that looks a very solid build, I would have got 8GB of RAM at current prices but 4GB is still fine
Maybe consider modding a H50 to stick on the GTX480, then it purrs. I have the core under water because I couldn't stand the fan, while the rest is fan cooled. Warning though - not many GENE-Z's left in the channel because it's due to be replaced soon. It's still compatible with Ivy upgrades but you won't get GEN-3 PCIe unless you buy the GENE-Z/GEN3. New one should be announced within a week so keep an eye out of its features and if you care to wait. You've pretty much got my PC setup though except for 8GB of memory and a Plextor SSD. There's overclocking guides for the GENE-Z on rog website too if you need.
