I know that everyone agrees that vinyl dye is the way to go. The problem is that I can find no product locally that claims to be "vinyl dye." Everything I can find says Vinyl Color, Vinyl Coating, or Vinyl Paint. Is there a certain brand I should be seeking out? Alot of forums, not this one, have posts claiming that Dupli-color Vinyl Color is indeed dye even tho it doesn't say dye anywhere on the can. The only brand I could find online that actually claims to be vinyl dye but its kinda high (SEM). Also, I'd like to find it locally so I can start dying as soon as possible. Every post I find on where to buy it says the same thing. "Check autoparts stores, Oreilly's, Autozone, and Lowes, etc." All I can find at these places is vinyl color and vinyl coating. Where in the U.S. can I get this and what brand should I be looking for? Thanks in advance
buuuzzz wrong answer. Anyways, i think rust oleum does a product called fusion, i saw it in wal mart and it looked interesting, says it bonds to plastics, as vinyl dye does, i believe.
rustoleum is a great brand and their fusions are mainly meant for plastic, but i hear they do work on vinyl too, i personaly use Krylon fusion paints, they come in many diffrent colors and works on most surfaces (i am not sure so read the label) you can probably find them at your local HOme Depot, Lowes, general hardware store (i found mine at the corner hardware store)
I read the can for Krylon Fusion and it and it seems to coat the plastic just like normal spray paint. Vinyl dye is supposed to actually seep into the plastic rather than cover it up. I just found out that Sherwin-Williams carries SEM paint products so I will probably go by there and see if they may have it. Did the Krylon leave the texture of the plastic or did it cover it up?
I used Krylon Fusion on my keyboard, and it did keep the texture of the plastic. Smotthed it out some, but you can still see it.
Krylon fusion is a spray paint just made to donb more aggresively to plastic. There are vinyl dyes that dye the plastic not just paint over it. Looks much nicer.
Check your local auto parts store, they have real vinyl dye spray cans, and just about everything else you need for modding, like bondo, fiberglass, sand paper, paint, etc.
