A "chav" is essentially a member of the British under-class: a poorly-educated thug with dubious fashion sense, poor literacy and little or no prospects for gainful employment. They sponge off the state extensively and, unfortunately for the gene pool, like to spawn mini chavs with their fellow chavs, thereby dragging this country further into the gutter. They like to harrass "normal" members of the public, whilst drinking cheap beer and smoking equally trashy cigarettes. I suppose the nearest equivalent for our American friends is "trailer trash". Being a chav is not the same as being a ricer, though there is some overlap.

To Mister_tad: cute little car - a crying shame it got broken into. Make sure they clear up all the glass. And it really isn't worth claiming off your insurance: your premiums will go up and it probably won't be all that much more than the excess anyway.

cant even tell it got broken into now, all clean and fixed. cost £118 in the end, as a load more glass went into the door than they originally thought. Could have been a lot worse though

So they are basically like what we in America call "Wanna-bes" and they are also Ricers. Nice. I hate those types of people.

 

Except search Vauxhall Nova and Ford Fiesta. And those are what they "mod".
Ricers in the US, tend to have a slight taste, at least they choose Jap cars!

 

Its not the cars they choose its what they do to them. One of the chavs back at home has a supra.
