Out of guarantee repair and replacement came up on the Chris Evans show today. The lady interviewed said a reasonable lifespan could be up to six years, depending on the item and price paid. I can't be sure of the timestamp as I was driving, but it came up somewhere around the 30-40 minute area. Here's the link.
Its 18 Months old, out of the supplied warranty, and you want them to fix it for free? Just pick up a PS3 Slim, or a cheap PS3 Phat of Play.com
Under the SoGA however I could hardly expect 18 months would be considered to be a reasonable amount of time for a product of ~£300 value. You wouldn't expect to have to replace your fridge, washing machine <insert other high value item here> after 1.5 years would you? Many fridges are less in value and are expected to last 5+ years.
Wooo Hooo Its alive I dismantled it and followed this guys video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vr1zyAGwnuU and its now working I didnt have a heat gun so I used my wifes hair dryer and it worked. It lives again. Screw you Sony and your £145 repair service. I wonder If I should sell it and be done with Playstation or keep it.
Im still very annoyed it only got to 18 months and failed. I didnt have much hope in fixing it, and I was suprised when it powered upafter putting it back to gether. Well its not screwed together yet because I didnt have any thermal paste. I temperarly slotted back together until i can buy some from maplin tomorrow before using it again.
I'de say keep unless you feel it might be prone to crashing again since you fixed it back up. I know how frustrating it can be. My PS3 crapped out early on due to water damage (Windows + Rain + Setting up a console right below it = Idiot) it had a 50/50 chance of powering on. So when I finally did get it working I left it powered on for a week solid before finally calling Sony and getting it replaced under warranty (What Sony doesn't know about why it stopped working won't hurt em hehe).
haha nice, i fail to see how in his video that the "heat gun" makes the solder reattach the chips, i reckon it's just the standard cooler failure or dust in the system Great to see it working again though I'd recheck the SoGA in your country, in ours a product worth that much ($749 NZD) would be expected to last 3 years and would be expected to goto court or at least a nasty letter to Sony about it
i think its because the chips have over heated and got something like a cold solder joint so you use a heat gun and heat the chips up so the solder melts and gives a connection. same as the towel trick for the xbox360.
Yep, it's funny how the same problem that kills the 360 is present in the PS3. Next time i see a PS3 fanboy going "omg RROD" i'll rub that in his face.
I thought the extended warranties were only for the afflicted 360's, and only cover RROD beyond the 1-year. The newer Falcon and Jasper revisions carry 1 year+2 also?
Why didnt he use a bit of compound remover (ArctiClean etc) to get the old TIM off in the video? Seems a very longwinded process for something that should have only taken a couple of minutes with the right materials. I wish Lian Li would bring out a case mod for the PS3 similar to that of the 360, something with a nice side window and a couple of 120mm fans, I'd be all over it! As a temp obsessed PC builder Ive now been forced to go and rip my 18 month old Ps3 to bits in order to to bless the cpu with a bit of the Arctic Silver it deserves. Not going to be too hard on Sony on their build quality though.... Take the stock cooler off an 8800GT and then you will witness the closest thing to an explosion in a TIM factory imaginable. The fans on my 40gb PS3 started making a high pitched noise two days ago. As mentioned I ran the fan clearing option and it worked (turn it off using the switch at the back, hold the eject button down then turn it back on....) and it worked a treat. I dont know if it will on any other models though. To buck the anti console trend I think my PS3 is a superb bit of kit and Id suggest the fact you managed to fix yours without too much effort suggets its not the failure your making out. Seen far too many PCs fail due to dust/ heat issues over the years when all people needed to do was take the side panel off and give them a clean every now and then.
I didnt realise it could be fixed when I first posted and was really just annoyed it broke so soon, after all it just sitts there and is not like it gets moved or knocked about. The fix was so simple and the PS3 is not difficult to take apart, very few parts. So with it fixed now I think I can now relaxe and start playing again. Also my wife is pleased because she didnt like the idea of buying another lol She is very tight
