I sure hope this isn't a repost, but anyway. My mate sent me this link of a demo of holophonic sound. It's like uber surround sound and works with any headphones. To get the full effect, close your eyes as well. It is absolutely awesome! linkeh: http://www.holophonic.ch/archivio/testaudio/Cereni - Holophonic.mp3
Yeah this was posted in IRC the other day, pretty impressive I must admit, I really did think there was someone else in the room too...
binaural its called and its not that great still no real forward sound like speakers give. the only true way to get this to work is to have a model of each individual persons ear made (including canal) and then place the mics in them before recording the sound. they use dummy heads to do this normally hence it doesnt fully work on people as its not done how each persons ear is (which are all completely different) even then it still cant beat properly set up stereo speakers
the match box example.. even through ipod headphones (all i have to hand) is insane... walking away was fubar'd though. It actually did sound like someone was moving them up and down left to right etc..
Its ok, nothing pheominal, I guess its kinda impressive that they've done that with 2 speakers, but why bother when you can get 5.1 easily enough? Kinda like working on making the steam train better when you can get diesel or electric ones no?
That works much better than any properly tuned 5.1 or stereo setup, especially if you have canalphones.
thats more surround sound than I get with my 7.1 speakers. I always thought that there was no real reason why you cant have surround sound out of headphones.
Well it's primarily for headphones since there aren't many 5.1 headphones around (and the ones that are aren't particularly good)
I know, it's terrible. I always have to buy crappy stereo headphones and my other 3 ears have no speaker near them
Maximum pc did a comparison on this sorruond speakers vs headphones in december or january, they dont have the article online anymore but check out some of their other headphone reviews as you might find the adverse of what you are hearing here. http://www.maximumpc.com/reviews/speakers/
That's pretty impressive. Reminds me of EAX surround effect thing in my old creative sound card. Seemed to me to be not only around you but also up and down. Neat. Still felt like it was just fading left and right, sort of behind me though.
