Are we talking orchestral scores that provide a musical foundation to help establish a mood or atmosphere in a movie, or are we talking soundtracks that feature songs from, or inspired by, a movie (though the two aren't mutually exclusive).

As far as soundtracks go, I'm a big fan of Disney music. Not the pop crap you hear these days. I'm talking about the old school songs, and most of the music from the animated features. I don't care what anyone says, Howard Ashman, Tim Rice and Alan Menken are/were all geniuses. My current Disney favorite is the Tangled soundtrack. My wife and daughter and I were all jamming to it earlier this evening.

Recently I've fallen in love with the Sucker Punch soundtrack. The mix of musical styles appeals to my varied tastes, and the hard sound is perfect when working in the garage.

In the realm of musical scores, I admit I'm a fan of Howard Shore's Lord of the Rings score. But then, I dig Wagnerian music, so it was an easy sell. John Williams' ET score ranks among my all time favorite music. I don't listen to it often, but it always holds a special place in my heart. I also enjoy his Harry Potter scores - especially The Prisoner of Azkaban.

My favourite one is the Star Trek score but that's been used already so I'll throw in another - the main theme from 2046. I've not seen the film myself but I was listening to a radio programme last month in which the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra played "some great film scores", including this, which most people hadn't come across before.

I listened to the Gattaca score religiously during uni (if you haven't watched Gattaca yet, just.... Ugh)
The blade runner score is also fantastic, as is the one for Moon, albeit a bit short and repetitive.
Oh, and while the movies are completely not to my taste, John Williams wrote some fantastic themes for Harry Potter.

Really love the Gundam Unicorn OST Gunsmith.

Yes it's old and it's cheesy, but this one surely deserves a mention:

Ennio Morricone - The Man with the Harmonica

One of my all time favourites

If it wasn't for the music then I don't think this film would have been as nearly as good

Two of my all time favourites, I'm always humming them absent mindedly at work.

Thank you. That was the other geniously compiled soundtrack which i couldn't remember. However any movie that uses Bjork is a massive win in my book.

Plus, mentioning Disney, i feel that The Nightmare Before Christmas deserves a mention.

for the record... i can't stand requiem for a dream...

but as for some of my favourite composers/films... oh and some games too [note... liking the soundtrack doesn't guarantee i like the film/game] -

Hans Zimmer [Batman Begins and The Dark Knight]
Jerry Goldsmith [Star Trek: First Contact]
    Jack Wall [Mass Effect 1 + 2]
Kelly Bailey [Half Life 1/2, Portal 2]
Mike Morasky [Team Fortress 2, Portal 2]
Mark Morgan [Fallout 1/2, Planescape: Torment]
    Pawel Blaszczak/Adam Skorupa [The Witcher]

...hmm just noticed they're mostly games... will have to have a bit more think on this...

yes! The cowboy bebop soundtracks (I own them all, including the remix album) were instrumental in breaking me out of my rock rut.
