Edit: Given my original post was answered most effeciently, lets move the conversation to something more amusing. What mispronunciations of common words most get under your skin? Original post: I always thought it was literally "EEE PEE-CEE", but I've just been a meeting with a bunch of more senior IT Research people, and heard it pronounced (variably) "EASE PEE-CEE" (as in ease of use, or literally 3 Es), and "EASY PEE-CEE". Which is correct? And whilst we're on the subject, are there any other words that are pronounced wrong that get a bee in your bonnet?
E PC. as in "eee pee see". that's the correct way: http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/eee-pc/how-to-pronounce-eee-pc-320007.php
It's just an EEE-PEE-CEE, afaik, so I'd say you are correct. God knows how they turned three e's into "Easy". Unless they have just swallowed three of aforementioned letter, in which case, I would just give them a bottle of water and let them dance it out in a dark corner all by themselves I have to combat the same thing every day. Idiots around me pronouncing the word daemon like "damon", when it's blatantly obvious that it's pronounced "demon". Fools.
isn't it eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee PC
I say E-P-C. Because that is how it is spelt. This bothered me when I first joined Bit-tech. I heard Ubisoft pronounced OO-BI-SOFT or OO-BE-SOFT instead of U-BE-SOFT. I heard Linux pronounced LIE-NUX instead of LIN-UX. I heard Pwn as POO-AN, POON, POAN and so on. I quickly put things on order
ugh. lie-nux, i hate when people say that! i had a friend at uni, total linux freak, loved it to bits, would never pronounce it right! nearly smacked him many a time.
It's actually worse than that, they called it an "EEEEEE-EASY PC". Which was pretty priceless. So how do you pronounce "pwn"? I always say "pown", like "own" with a P at the front. But I've heard others pronounce it as simply "own", with a silent P. Which makes no sense if you ask me. Although my younger brother for a short period thought it was pronounced "pwined". My favourite is "epitome". It's not just that some people pronounce it "ep-ih-tome", but some even believe that "ep-ih-tome" is a different word to "eh-pit-om-ee", with a different meaning. That's just classic.
I always got confused with URL and .swf and all those little file extensions. When I was self learning everything I just decided how they were said in my own head and made a complete tit of myself when I got a job and everyone thought different. I say ess doubleyou eff for example, (which I still think is right), but everyone else I know says swiff for .swf. Then again, I say url as if it was a word when most people say you are ell. Each unto their own I guess
Hyperbole - it always irks me when I hear it pronounced hyper-bowl Pronunciation - how apposite it is that some people say pro-noun-ciation. Fatigue - I've only ever heard one person mispronounce this. I was watching The Weakest Link, and a question comes up asking what 7-letter word describes a tiring and loss of energy. The contestant paused for a second, and then blurted out "fat-ee-gooey!"
LED, light emitting diodes. It is pronounced L-E-D or el-ee-dee but I hear so many people say it as lead like you use for fishing sinkers.
LOL!! I think "Pwn" gets mispronunced a lot, you can say it "Puwn" - "Pown" etc.. Depends how people say their Ws.
People in the UK mispronouncing schedule and aluminium. Idiots. I heard Audi pronounced 'oar-de' the other day
Bugger me! I never knew Asus was pronounced "ah-soose". I always thought it was "ay-sus". You learn something new every day.
