http://www.mit.edu/~wchuang/humor/college/English_is_Crazy.html Don't forget "queue". English is weird, but American English is worse. What's with all the 'Z's instead of 'S's. Ka is definitely "car". Not a mispronunciation, but using "imply" when you mean "infer". Also thinking about prepositions at the end of sentences and double negatives makes me realise how much of a pedant I really am.
On that (and a few more examples) the Yanks have the right of it, historically. We changed the 'z' in words like 'realize' to an 's' after America had been colonized; they stayed with the traditional spellings.
She is wrong. However, I have heard car dealers call a Ford Ka a Ford "Kay-ay". Presumably to avoid the obvious confusion that could arise in having a ford car called a ford ka. BTW: Don't even get me started on QUEUE... Edit: BTBTW: My hundredth post on bittech was predominately about how to pronounce the name of a small car. Go figure.
Queue: it's pronounced Q. End of story. The additional letters on the back come from the French language, and as such can be ignored. Coupe should be pronounced "coop". It sounds small and sleek and fast. Cou-pay sounds like a bad hairpiece.
Slight deviation - this is one that winds me up: "I don't feel obliged to do that" "I don't feel obligated to do that" Which one is correct? Because to me, "obliged" would be correct.
obligated sounds more like the person has their head stuck between their buttocks? buttuks, not butt-ox, btw.
In Malay we use Leftenan. I don't hear LIE-NUX much. Everyone knows how to pronounce Linux. Funniest is this girl from this local game store, "Oh, I don't know, maybe it's on the "Double-U Eye Eye". Spellings that annoy me, Then <-> Than There <-> They're Their <-> They're I'm not obliged to do that. I don't feel obligated to do that. Isn't it?
Tomato. Tom - ar - toe NOT Tom - ate - toe I can understand that certain people have foot obsessions, and like to do certain things to toes, but for the love of whatever deity you believe in, naming a piece of fruit after a fetish is just not on...it's tom-ar-toe.
my pet hate is people dropping the letter T all the time.... what becomes wha tomato becaomes tomaho Brighton becomes Brighon etc etc
why are you adding extra letters! a damnable practice. its tom ah toe you fool. unless your from one of the funny places like yorkshire, then it could be anything. ooooo arrrrrrr.
It's Ay-Sus, the name came from the word Pegasus, i've never heard anyone called the winged horse Peg-A-Sooooos. Porsche is Por-sha, EEE PC is E P C, coupe is coop-ay. Speaking of cars, how about some Lamborghinis? Diablo, Gallardo, Murcielago, Reventon? Correct me if i'm wrong, but I believe that it is Dee-ablo, Ga-yar-do, wikipedia says moor-thee-EH-la-goh, and Re-ben-ton. I want a Lamborghini...
not AY-SUS http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/eee-pc/how-to-pronounce-eee-pc-320007.php?autoplay=true also if it was taken from pegasus, it wouldnt be ay-sus never heard people say peg-ay-sus before.
