Ok, it's probably the graphics that I'm mistaken about.

We've still got it at home, and it'd still make an excellent office/web computer if I was allowed to do a fresh OS install on it and replaced the fans.

    2000 (built in 99 I assume)

    P3 450 MHz
    256 MB Sdram
    ~10 GB-ish hard drive(?)
    Riva TNT 16 MB
Sound Blaster (the normal one, whatchmacallit... 16 or 32..)
    Generic case
    56 k modem
    SCSI-card(!)
    Windows 98

Was my parents rig, I didn't get it until 2003.. Gotta love the slot processors, those things were just silly.

    Current workhorse
    Q9450
    4 GB
    1 TB
    HD4870
    passively cooled 400 W psu
    Fortress 1

What really makes these two systems apart is that the current case, PSU, keyboard and mouse cost over 500 €, and back in the day paying such money for those would have gotten me to mental hospital. It's also more than the cpu+mobo+memories and probably graphics together...

    10 years ago, huh?

    Then:
    Manufacturer: Self-built
    CPU: Celeron 700MHz
    Ram: 128MB
    VGA: Riva TNT

    Between:
    a 2000+ Athlon XP, a 2.8GHz P4 Prescott

now (3 years old as well, mostly - but still game-worthy thanks to a new GPU and a RAM injection)
    C2D E6600 2.4GHz, running at 3.2 GHz
    4GB DDR2 800MHz RAM
    GeForce GTS250 512MB
around 2TB of various HDD space

    Then:

    Manufacturer: Heavily modified compaq
    CPU: Intel 486 100MHz
    RAM: 64Megs EDO
GPU: 1Meg tseng(or was it trident?!) ISA graphics card *phear my powah!*
HDD: 600Meg drive (dont remember specs)
    Other Drives: 24x CD drive
    Networking: None
    OS: Win95

This was my first PC I had when I was about 13 I think, it was a hand me down from my cousin, who even today supplies me with spare parts when I need them. He's pretty awesome like that.

    Today:

    Manufacturer: None, Self-Built
    CPU: Intel P4e 3GHz, overclocked to 3.4
    RAM: 2GB (2x1GB) DDR400
GPU: Sapphire ATi Radeon HD3850 512MB AGP
    HDD: 260GB Seagate 7200
    Other Drives: IDE DVD-RW/CD drive
    Networking: onboard gigabit
    OS: Win XP / Win7

Not the most powerful system its about 4 years old now I think, but it handles everything I throw at it game wise (so far) so im not too fussed. That being said an upgrade would be nice, maybe next year or later this year i'll consider it. I'll have to at some point since im nearing its limits for upgrading.

But im in that position where if anything goes (CPU, graphics card, memory) it means buying a new motherboard and completely rebuilding the system since they dont really make DDR/AGP graphics/S478 CPU's anymore. Not cheep :(

    2000:
    Manufacturer: Time(modified)
    CPU: AMD Athlon 900Mhz
    RAM: 32MB(upgraded to 64MB)
    GPU: Nvidia TNT2 AGP
HDD: 20GB seagate of some sort.
Other Drives: 24x Sony CD-RW, 4x Sony DVD player
Networking: 56k modem, which got replaced with a Asus Wi-fi card in 2006.
    Sound: Creative Soundblaster
    OS: Win98SE

I remember that PC being a beast when my dad bought it in '99, and it came with a large number of games(C+C Red Alert, Recoil, Star Wars:Rogue Squadron and some others) and tacky looking hardware(scanner, printer, joystick-replaced with a nice saitek, gamepad)
    Now:
    Manufacturer: Self-built
    CPU: Intel Q6600 3.6Ghz
    RAM: 4GB Corsair DDR2
    GPU: ATi HD4850 1GB
    HDD: 500GB Samsung F1
    Other Drives: Belkin CD/DVD R/W
Networking: Asus wifi, gigabit networking not used
    Sound: Creative X-fi Fatality
    OS: Win XP 32bit/Windows 7 64bit
This one I got to pay for, but definatly worth the money. Still play some of the games from 2000. I have C+C installed anyway and the whole Baldurs Gate series. :)
