yes it's my pc which ended up not how i wanted it. :(
very disappointing, because I did not plan properly.

if you think it looks cool from a distance, better off not seeing close ups.

it's ridiculously heavy. I can hardly move it. Because I'm going to school this fall I'm hoping to buy Thermaltake ElementS and make a separate box for radiators.

I'm a manager for a large rental company. I can guarantee you've heard of the company and probably used them to move before. TBH, I'm not exactly rolling in the dough, I just have a low cost of living. Makes it easier to set money aside for my addictions.

It occurs to me you may have meant "What do I do that needs that much rack space in my home?" Well, I suppose I don't really. This all kinda stems of from a "mod" I saw years ago. I tried searching for it but didn't come up with more than a few vague forum posts and some domains for sale. It was called the Deathstar Mainframe and it went through a few different versions. I have two pics of it I uploaded to flickr:

So, back when I saw this thing, it kinda sparked the dream of one day having my own rack. Many years later, I began to collect enough crap that one day I thought "I could save some room around here if I just threw this crap in a rack. After a quick search I found out just how damned expensive everything gets if you add "rackmount" to the product description. I wrote the idea off to the "later in life when Im making mad monies" pile of dreams.

A few more years go by and then craigslist comes onto the scene. One day, I find a post for a rack for sale for $35. That became my first rack. Since then, I've been addicted to filling it. I check craigslist almost every day for deal on rackmount hardware. One day I went into goodwill and found a really nice rack case for $20. Now I check there all the time. The Austin store has yielded some really great finds. I don't have a running total but I think I've spent less than a $1000 on all this. I've lucked into some great stuff. If I can sell the fibre switch, I should be able to make my money back on the new racks. Since the whole thing has never proved very expensive, why not do it.

As for all the stuff in the racks themselves, well, three of the cases are empty. On is my gaming box and the rest are pretty much file servers. One of my ofter computer related addictions is media. Coupled with my issues of not wanting to delete crap, I go through storage pretty quick. Luckily, hard drives are pretty cheap. RAID is pretty much a standard feature on most motherboards these days too. All told, it averages out to about $150 a month in hardware.

ya, it's functional and works great but EXTREMELY impractical.

Will NOT be fun when I disassemble it.

"LockmanX" Awsome setup you have there, I think I'll stop looking for a cheap 24U rack, and go straight for the 42U... looks alot more manly :p

and, how far do you sit from the monster screen? tried sitting close to my 46" samsung tv, and the heat from the thing was drying up my eyes :p

A little update from me... Doing a million stuff at the same time, as usual.
The main rig got upgraded with the new mobo so I'm trying to push the CPU as far as I can with stock cooling. At the same time, the rig behind the screen is a collection of spare parts that might become my new fileserver if it passes the torture tests :)
Oh, and, Compact Mess is out of it's box again, and I'm reshuffling some ideas. I've not given up! :)

I know what you mean. Racs not only look good, they are practical as well. If I had the space I would have a full-size IBM rack in my home. (I could have gotten it for free as well). Now that I'm in the process of redesigning my computer room, i regret that I didn't get it back then.

I'm a bit angry that the person who built the house I'm in, made the roof in all the rooms in the basement 3cm to low to fit a normal 42U rack.
currently on a lookout for a 24U or 36U rack here in norway.. the 12U I have now is to small to expand my storage-server :sigh:

maybe a place of my own, so I can get out of my parents basement.. turning 24 this year, so about time.. :hehe:

Not a bad rig, may I ask which Cooler Master that is? Also, how's temps? I idle @ 21-24°C(ambient 13-16°C/55-60°F). Orthos after 11hours 12min & 13seconds(& counting :D) gets my CPU to 44°C on air. LinX gets CPU to 48°C & IBT gets the CPU up to 54°C.:brrr:. I'm stable w/ OCCT auto test, LinX 50passes/53min+, IBT 20passes+, & waiting for Orthos Blend to hit 12 hours, lol. No wasting power/money, I worked today.
Edit: easy hit w/ the infamous 12-hour Orthos Blend test.

I friend of mine filled his entire screen + more with icons (well files), he had to remember the combination of arrow key presses to find certain files.
