you get a power fan and run it and 7 volts which does't half the cfm but decreases the db a lot.

look here girls, play nicely and everyone will get along....

now to split this up: we are talking about two seperate things that when combined produce another....

    we have:
    a) heatsink
    b) fan
    c) hsf

where both a, and b reflect the performance of c...

now the reason why it dont really matter wat fan u use on the alpha cause its a brilliant heatsink, so even if b is crap c will still be good if a is used correctly....

now if you do have a great fan and a great heatsink such as the alpha and papst/ystech/sunon/mechatronics/whatever you fancy fan then c will be even better as both a and b are good....

the reason most people who use the alpha dont mind the noise is cause they are more then your average user and prefer cooler temps to noise....that might not be the case for everyone but i guess for most people....

.icecube...just for you, it is worth the effort in mounting the alpha, no you dont need to take all your bits n pieces of your mobo but it does make it easier...and if you cant be assed just a get a taisol 760 whose performance is brilliant aswell....

    Because it:

    1) Safer - Bolts on to motherboard
    2) Cools better than the gimmicky Zalman (which many ppl at OcUK think as well)

The fan is separate to the heatsink......a fan can seriosuly effect the way the heatsink performs, and most of all its noise levels. An Alpha and a Delta will cool better but be far louder than an Alpha and a Pabst. The Alpha is more flexible than the Zalman because it was designed to be a performance heatsink for overclocking, rather than the Zalman which is pretty much designed to be as quiet as possible. This means an Alpha with a quiet fan will cool well because of the heatsink design even though the fan is weak, and if in the future you want to overclock heavily, just get a more powerful fan. With the Zalman you are more limited.......its is designed for quietness, not performance.

As for fans, the mechatronics 53cfm one seems best for the Alpha, being the best cfm for noise ratio. Deltas will shift more air, but be far louder and the benefit of the extra airflow will not make that much difference (as there is only so much heat the Alpha can dissipate into the air around it..after a point more air will make little difference).

    :)

well....you can jut put a new layer on....but if you want to get rid of it, i saw at maplins some acid or something like it, that breaks it down, completley safe ....or get a screwdriver out and start hacking!!!! (not reccomended...had a friend who did it: had to buy new core!!)

if you can pinch/borrow a plastic glue stick from a school - the white ones you use to spread white school glue around.

this can be used to carefull scrape the thermal compoud of off the chip and they can be also used to put artic silver 3 on as well. As they work really well.

To get it off of the heatsink you want to scrap as much off as you can but not with somthing that will scratch the metal badly. You want to get hold of some propan-2-ol. I thinks thats what it is called. It is a kind of alchol. You can also use very find wet and dry to get some of it off.

    700th post - finally.

This is the strength of the Alpha. It is so versatile that it can play silent (7V mechatronics, Papst, etc) or it can play rough (Delta, Mechatronics). As said before, the advantage over the zalman is the security of the bolt-on heatsink.

Anyone who has used the Alpha knows....

right, thanks to everyone that has replied and helped me.

i think ill just have to scrape as much off as poss, as i cant find any places that sell this propan stuff.

    thanks everyone :D

use a sharp razor blade to scrape it of and then methylated spirits to clean it...but make sure theres no meth left at the end of it or ur cpu might burn....:eeek:

how you get thermal compound off ure chip

you know those tape head cleaning kits you get for ure vcr...:naughty: well look at the contence of the little red bottle that comes in said kit... does it say isopropyl alchohol ?
if it does (and it should) then pour some of this stuff on ure chip and get and ear cleaning fugal stick and gently swab away the liquid it could take a little while but it is the way i always do it. it evaporates quickly and doesnt harm the chip they recomend it on the arctic silver site i think.

    mmkay;)

edit : just looked at the date of the last post... whoops

    so theres
    overclock ]overclock[/URL]
    overclocking store
    also how confusing
    overclockers

i found the oc store to be the best and overclock to be the worst but thats my experience
