Do a Bit tech themed chess set. A dremel for a king, a file for the queen, a hammer for the knights, a screwdriver for the rooks...

The market's too narrow for such a themed set.

That could be just a generic carpenters/woodworkers chess set.

Penski I like what you have drawn up so far.

The curves will help to refract the light.
And the cuts will create fragments that will reflect the light.

    ------------------------------
I did think of putting a bit-tech logo under the glass.
But that would narrow the buyers to the people on bit-tech.
Which if course most of use don't have too much desposable income :(
I think that eBay would be the best place to auction it.
But it would have to get "advertized" and plugged around the community.
(I have favors I can pull for a couple famous websites :D )

A tool based set would be too narrow a market.

A modern looking set would appeal to a high-tech or modern market. (Like Sharper Image, Brookstone, or other Gadget shop)

Here is a 3D Rendering of Bishop piece (I assume)

Left, Penskie's design as close as I can get it.
Right, a more economical, 'easy to lathe' design.

If custom made in this fasion the entire bottom could be made of metal, with an maget at the bottom.
Then the glass attached to the center.

The piece would be 1 inch wide. (The chess square is 1.5")
The bishop would be 3.5 inches tall.

Should I move this back into the project logs?

-> maybe this should be in project log seeing as your getting a lot done :D
-> if the whole bottom is metal that means that the piece would have to be placed almost exactly at the center of the square (over the led) for the light to shine through the piece.

I can get a magent that is exactly 1" round, with a 1/2" hole.
It could then just glue to the bottom of the base.
That way the base could be either glass, or a 1" piece of metal.
(With a hole in the center)

-> ok, those magnets with 1/2" holes sound good.
-> how far apart will the hall sensors be? approximately the same distance as the diameter of the magnets, right?

Each hall sensor is 1.5" apart, centered in the middle of the square.

If you look at the movie above, this distance will work perfectly.

-> have you tested the circuit under a piece of glass or plexi? from the video it seems like the sensors have a short range.

    I have, tested.

The sensor (in the video) is about 1/4" lower than it will be in the proto type. (It is located about halfway up the LED)

Once built on a PCB the top of the LED and hall sensor will be at the exact same height.

So the range should be perfect at that point.

    Sweet rendering, Zap :)

    Yeah...That be the Bishop.

I don't have a scanner just now but I can take little pics like that, you can say what you want to see in more detail, I'll redraw and take them somewhere to scan.

I like the bishop the most.
The others on the paper either look too hard to manufacture(Unless they are cast), and other one I like looks top heavy.

You design does give me some ideas to base other peices on.
But for sure if you can draw some up, I will gladly render and put them up for a vote.

Would you have a problem if we opened the designs up for other to post?
Based on your inital design, ( I dont want to see any dremels )

[Edit: And using that round, angled metal base you rendered...It looks cool.]

    -WoW-

    Ur a true god !

at first, I didnt think u were going to make this work ; as I get myself alot into things that would be possible to do .. and I start on it .. then somewhere I screw up... and I fail in making it

It seems we have 2 different kind of modders at bit-tech

    * the 'normal' extremely good modder, one who mods an existing case... but can do extremely cool and good mods (like.. lets say ouija , etc.)

    * the god's .. people like linear, zapwizard, mashie ... who create case's... electronic stuff... just EVERYTHING, I could only dream off

I just wanna become a first kind of modder :) then I'd be extremely happy

Zap, u amase me with each and every of your projects

That's actually a really good idea. I wouldn't fancy splitting the return though, it would be a much better idea to use it on another project.

    I think so :thumb: .

I would like to have a go at that, there is a lot of creativity in chess pieces.
