This brought a flashback to a text based game on the zx spectrum. Think it may have been a hobbit or lotr one?

The Hobbit, I'd guess - it was a smash-hit. "Thorin sings about gold."

Well, those dwarves sure do love their gold.

May have had something to do with Sauron’s influence through the Seven, the rings of power that were gifted to the Dwarves when he could still take on a fair appearance and had disguised himself as Annatar, “The Lord of Gifts”. It didn’t quite work out the way he initially planned, since Dwarves are hard to tame and their hearts are hidden to others - you can thank Aulë the Smith for that, even though it was ultimately Eru Ilúvatar who gifted them with a life and will of their own, since the Flame Imperishable is his and his alone to command. But I guess it eventually worked out OK for Sauron in the end, because even though he could not subdue the will of the Dwarves through the influence of the One, the Seven did inspire a greed for wealth in the hearts of the Dwarf-lords who bore them, which ultimately did work in Sauron’s favour. Not the least of which being the downfall of the Dwarrodelf, Khazad-dûm, later known as Moria, “The Black Pit”, when the Dwarves inadvertently awoke a demon of the ancient world, a Balrog which became known as Durin’s Bane, in their search for Mithril. Much of which had actually been recovered by Sauron himself, since he covets Mithril greatly.

    Uhh….

    Sorry….

    What were we talking about….?

Oh yes! Zork is open source now!

That’s pretty cool, I guess . Never got on with text adventures myself, they were never quite “immediate” enough for me in those early days. Even when the format moved into point & click adventure games, it took a while for them to start to “click” with me. I think Sam & Max Hit The Road was the first one I really got on with, helped a great deal by its humour.

But I’m tempted to give these a go

    Maybe.

I may be misremembering, it may have been something else as I'm sure whatever it was was pure text, no illustrations.

    Not sure though tbh.

I still remember playing "Colossal Cave Adventure" on the local college's mainframe back in 1982.
