Hi everyone, its Stefan from RandomDesign again. This time I want to present my latest project. But first, the hardware list: Mobo: MSI Z270 Gaming M7 VGA: MSI 980Ti Lightning CPU: Intel I7 6700K Memory: HyperX Predator 4x4GB 3000Mhz SSD: HyperX Savage 240GB PSU: Enermax Revolution 650W Fan: Enermax D.F. Vegas Single Water cooling: bitspower The concept: The design of this mod is based on the "Type 9" shuttle from the TV series Star Trek Voyager. The shape for the basic construction is made from styrofoam. Therefore, I glued several layers together to get the right hight. The rough shape was then cut with a knife. The finer work was done with a rasp. At the end I used a sanding sponge to smooth out rhe surface.
After the basic shape was done I applied multiple layers of glass fiber and epoxy resin. It is important to use epoxy here and not polyester resin. polyester resin will jsut destroy the foam core. After that was cured. Body filler was used to cover the entire body. I also gave it a rough sandind and repeated the step until the surface was even and smooth.
Next, I added some details on the body. Therefore, I masked an area that should be highlighted with some rubberfoam and filled it with body filler. Afterwards, I removed the rubberfoam, sanded the body and applied a layer of sprayfiller. Then, I filled smaller gaps to make the surface as smooth as possible. After this was done, I cut the body for creating the opening. I removed the styrofoam core with some aceton. I marked the position of the windows and cut them out.
Next, I installed the opening system. The hinges were mounted to a wooden block and then attached to the body. I installed two wooden blocks, that will later hold the plate for the hardware. To close the gaps between the lid and body, I covered one side with tape and applied body filler. That way both edges will fit perfectly. Then, I cut the holes for the fans in the back. On the bottom side, I included the holes for the fans of the radiator as well as the PSU. I alo cut an opening which I will be using later to isntall the cables etc. In the top I drilled holes for the water tank that will be installed directly behind the opening mechanism.
spectacular is the word indeed, it took shape so fast, it's already so close to the result in a few steps, when I first looked up the styrofoam base, and the last pic...
Thanks guys. And up we go with the next update. I cut a wooden board into shape so that is fits perfectly inside the mod. Then the hardware was placed to see if the layout is good looking. Holes were made, for the water cooling and cable. To keep it simple, the sufrace was covered with black foile. This will ad a bit more contrast later on with the silver fittings and blue cooling liquid. For the windows, I cut acrylic glas into shape and attached it wit cylinder head screws.
I painted the entire body in a grey color. I went for a darker color then in the original, that way I can highlight some areas more easily later one. For the illimunation, I glued two RGB-stripes into place. Unfortunately, I missed some pictures in the making process of the engiens. For them, I first made a 3D model and printed it. After sanding, all the parts were glued together. I included pieces of acrylic glass, that will be illuminated not only with LEDs but also with a running light effect.
Thanks to all of you. This really kept me motivated Haha, I just watched all seasons recently too. And now for the last update before the final pictures. I started off by installing the waterblocks for the CPU and Memory. The GPU should be placed horizontal above the mainboard. Therefore, I built a small mounting that holds the graphics card. Before placing the board with the installed hardware back into the mod, I installed all the needed acrylic tubings. Finally, I made some extensions for the cables and sleeved them.
