I still have my old faithful G15 keyboard which saw me well for many years until the wasd key caps wore through and I temporarily upgraded to the G510. My kids then used it for a year or 2 until the rubber dome under the d key broke. I'm tempted to remove the LCD screen and control board and re utlise it if possible. Worth/possible doing?
Huzzah! I'm not the only one still rocking the G15! I ordered mine back in 2006 I think and been using it every day since. Sorry for not being of any use to your original post, just happy to see another G15 user
It's looking like I can cut the whole lcd section away quite tidily and the screen still works with all the extra pcb's disconnected
Well after lots of jig sawing and dremeling I ended up with this. Needs something to seal the edges but once its in position you cant really see the gaps at the bottom and its structurally sound. If anyone has any ideas what I could use to tidy the open edges up that would be useful.
Damn fine job ,looks the part under your monitor Cant see the edges you are referring too , but there is that mouldable putty stuff that sets hard ? sorry cant think of its name lol
Thank you, yes you can only see the open edges if you look side on. I thought about using something like that putty but I would sort of like to be able to open it all up again should I need to.
Wow, that's great job! My G15 orange is still perfectly working and looks like new. I wouldn't able to put a jigsaw to a perfectly working keyboard. Having said that, I'd love if you had more photos and perhaps even a guide on how you did this. Might come in handy some day. Also, G5 orange mouse!! You had the exact same setup as me! They do look great together.
I should have taken more photos, like I've said earlier it looks great in situ but the sides and the bottom are open and kinda ugly. When I come up with a solution I will take photos before and as I fix it so people can see what it looks like. It wasn't straight forward as its in four sections, plus 2 pcbs and I had to cut 3 of the four sections. The larger sections meant I had to hack it up first with a jigsaw else I couldn't use my dremel with its cutting wheel at 90 degrees due to obstructions and the fact that my flexi attachment is broken. Probably took me 3 - 4 hours in total. The media keys still work as does the windows lock button but alas the mute button doesn't as it's part of the complete keyboard ribbon thing which had to go.
A project I've always wanted to do too. Going to derail a bit since I feel like sounding off a logitech keyboard owner's club. G15 v2 x2 (me and bro) G9 for laptop, G9x for desktop. Bro uses G500 G51 speakers G29
Good looking mod CB, always liked the G15 for its LCD. Really good upcycling project, I've wanted a status LCD for ages and never got on with it - inspired by this
