i've been trying to get into bit torrent but i've been having some difficulties...

first, someone reccomended !burst and abc. I tried each one individually and they gave me the same error: when i tried to install, running the .exe file opened a window that said "extended memory manager already installed" and some driver wasn't installed...

then, someone reccomended i try torrentstorm, which installed just fine, but when i tried to download (using torrent files from novatina.com, which i'm told is a good source) i got lots of "bad info. from tracker" "scrape invalid" etc...some i would just be constantly be "connecting," although i actually started downloading a file once, but after a few hours the rate never exceeded .1 kb/s even though i'm running a cable connection and there were 5 or 6 seeders for that file...

can anyone reccomended me a good client or some advice on how to fix the above problems to use these clients.

PS: i uninstalled each before trying the others and no, i don't have a firewall.

I personally use Azureus. It is full of features and easily customisable.

    Azureus here!!

just make sure that your firewall is set to allow outgoing/incoming on ports 6881-6889

ABC works fine - 4662-4669, as well as opening them in my router too.

I suspect your problem is deeper routed than just installing a bit torrent client.

Azureus is the king of clients. The only downside is its a resouce hog, and really benefits from an occasional reboot.

Rufus is another good one that people don't really know too much about. It has a lot of the features of Azureus. Rufus is basically an updated version of the G3 client with the majority of the bugs removed. Definitely worth a look.

Azureus is a memory hog, use BitTornado... or DC++ (not bittorrent).. bittorrent is dieing with loki torrent and suprnova shutting down.

Where is your factual evidence for that? :p
BT isn't dying at all, it was never intended to be used to share copyrighted files, so maybe illegal P2P filesharing has gone down a little since the shutdown of suprnova and lokitorrent. BT is just as useful and widely used as ever, you just have to know where to look to find your torrents ;).

    And fourthed.

It is a huge mem hog, but I've found that if you turn off Disk Caching (or whatever it's called) it helps a ton. But you don't want to be running torrent downloads when gaming anyways :thumb:

I'm still semi-tempted to try out exeem but I think it has a lot of adware in it

But last I knew, bittorrent traffic was some one third of ALL internet traffic... not exactly dying.

Yeah the only problem with Azureus is it's a memory hog... mostly I find becuase it uses java to be cross platform capable.

Bit Comet unfortunately was (is) unsecure becuase it shares its tracker with others. Meaning if your using a secure torrent site it will share those secure torrent lists with others and then you get nabbed.

Being a n00b to all things BT, I installed exeem last night. No adware (according to AdAware), it's apparently paid for with the ads. Might try some of these others though.

Tried lots, hated Azereus, loved Bit-tornado

I found Azereus to be a bit of a RAM hog, whilst Tornado was simple and clean allows download priority, bandwidth limiting etc.

If you're finding Azureus to be a RAM hog make sure you have the latest Java installed. Mine's fine now, doesn't hog at all.

Back to the question though, which ISP are you with? They might have a transparent proxy that's giving you grief?

    You can check it here:

personally i find the basic bit-torrent client to be more than adequate for what i need (i .use the nix version, and the curses interface, its lean and mean)

as for your speed, are you behind a router? i see a *LOT* of people behind routers having massive issues getting good speed with BitTorrent. the solution is dead easy. (at least, with the standard BitTorrent client). just forward ports 6881-6889 TCP to your machien in the router, and watch your speeds go up like a rocket. if you need to use port triggering, iirc the tracker port is outbound on 6969 TCP.
