I'm at the point with this xeon board now I'm looking for cheap opteron 940 dual cores! (so I can SMP). Gah i hate broken hardware Anyone have any?
They're in a 5u rackmount case. Well the noise factor may not matter too much as the damn board won't work
For the same price I can buy two dual core 2.2 opterons or a 9600GT. This will be going into the ASUS K8N-DRE board. Which would get the highest PPD? Of course they will both be done at some point but which should be first? Basically i'm asking SMP or GPU...
I dont think there's much in it but I would've thought a quad core SMP box folding a3 WUs will beat the 9600GT even with low clocks. Would the Opterons not be roughly comparable to a Q6600 at stock 3-4K PPD maybe more? The 9600GT I think will be closer to the 3K mark but you will be able to OC the shader clock & hopefully squeeze out a little bit extra performance.
Confusis your planning on buying these right? AMD Opteron 275 HE Italy 2.2GHz 2 x 1MB L2 Cache 1GHz HT. That's a total of 4MB L2 cache with 2 of these, the proc spec /the DRE board only supports DDR1. A Q6600 has 8M L2 cache shared & supports DDR2 so I'm thinking they will probably produce closer to 3K PPD. How much CPU time will you be using for file sharing etc? This will obviously impact on the folding peformance whereas the GPU isn't going to be slowed down.
Yep, Tesla that's them. CPU time for file sharing will be minimal - mostly going to be a backup server for now. Only looking at the dual core opterons as I have already paid for the board! Looking at those numbers I should go for the card first. Would be nice to get the xeon board going too but nobody seems to be helping much over in the Tech Support forum! (the help so far has been good though)
Ok I'm officially addicted. Just bought two more dual xeon boards. D'oh! Oh well 3x xeon smp machines soon then hopefully. Time to design a custom case!
Cool, all my boards have arrived. Will hopefully have one or two going tonight. It sucks I have to go to work when there's systems to build!
Just plugged in the power adapter to the server grade psu in my e-atx case. Turned it on, expecting to hear it single beep for successful boot. Except I see a flash of electric blue/white light from the psu. >.< Will dissect it tommorow to see if it's hopefully a fuse. I do have two spare 603 boards if this board is loading it too much - they don't require the 8pin power plug and are atx not eatx
It was only a fuse. Will replace today. I moved the xeons to my new Tyan atx boards, and on a lower wattage PSU. Starts fine! Will install win2k3 later today and get it folding. Where's my spare pc speaker.... this one isn't posting either x.x
Nope it blew the psu and fuse. The 8pin adapter was the wrong design so i've probably blown the board, and maybe the cpus too. Will wait for a response from the ebay seller. The yellow and black wires were transposed, and two yellow wires were connected to the 5v pin on the molex plugs! EDIT: Now I'm still looking for dual core 940 opterons, coolers and a psu to suit. ><
Damn that is some serious bad luck dude! Isn't the yellow wires supposed to be 12v!? Why did the seller move them??
