If I want outright speed, I'll buy an SSD. If I want storage, I'll buy a large cheap HDD.
This drive fails at both of those.

They didn't send BT a drive early for performance testing? Shame on WD. Unless you have to wait to disclose the review.

But an SSD is at the moment far too expensive for a decent one so if you want anything inbetween then this is the best alternative.

Small SSD + 2TB Mechanical drive Cheesecake, faster, more capacity for storage and less noise.

Toms hardware made a review of it. Can't Bit-Tech get one of these? What I saw, is that as a storage hard-drive is fast as hell... The price is still too high, if they get their price to 200€ the 450gb it would be great :)

I had one of the older 150gb Raptor drives and while it was fast the noise was unbearable. I'd reckon the new will be the same so I'll wait until the SSD's come down in price.

Just read the Anandtech review. Random write 4KB performance was 20 (yes twenty) times slower than my SSD. This is just polishing a turd, nothing more.

so how much are they anyway?

are they really that much cheaper than SSD?

last I checked a velociraptor im so disgusted with the price, i bought 2x320gb drives for less than half the price and put them on RAID-0......

even enterprise-wise, id rather put a SAS drive...

Seeing as a 600GB SSD is going into ludicrous amounts of money, a faster than average hard drive isnt totally obsolete yet. If you have a lot of uncompressed video to process, its still possibly your best option.

    160gb SSD + 2TB HDD = ~$500-$600. 600GB Raptor? Maybe $500. I'd go with the 2 drive option any day.

Whatever happened to WD idea of a 20k Raptor to compete against SSD lol in reality its possible but they would probably need to water cool that beast =p At the same time I have to admit its cool seeing a 600gb Raptor but it certain is most likely a last ditch effort before they give up on that side of the storage market and embrace the SSD side.

I would like to see a head to head comparison with this drive and the Seagate's Savvio, and maybe a similar matched SSD and then compare price to performance to storage.

Why don't they just apply the Velociraptor name to SSDs?
