For detection ability, don't bother with trusted buddies - check AV test sites like AV Comparatives.

Yep Norton is actually worse than useless.

My vote is for NOD32 - light running and never had a problem with it so far

Norton 2009 is actually very good. But not any other version than 2009.

Panda and McAfee are pretty poor. That leaves Kaspersky and Norton (2009).

Have you considered a freeware solution?

I'd personally rather fork out £10-£20 for an Anti Virus than lose hundreds from my bank account?

I've been using avast free, and i'm very happy with it. If I felt I needed more I would go with nod or kaspersky, heard nothing but good things about both.

I use kapersky in a vm to check things.. vista and win7 don't need to run antivirus (if it's your home rig) with the uac.. I wouldn't use norton or avg.. even nod cause the virus makers get by those first.. the most popular are always targeted for the slippy

If you happen to bank with Barclays, they give you 3 (three) licenses for kaspersky Internet Security 2010...

I use Avira AntiVir Personal, it's quick and works well. Also comes near the top of the AV Comparatives.

Is Avast still modelled on a music player interface? I hated that. Or am I thinking of something else?

I prefer AVG, but at the same time, I run kaspersky for all my server setups. But, most everything I run is clamav (Linux, ofc.)

I was on AVG but heard that it wasn't so good lately so I changed to Avira after my reformat. Its run without a hitch so far, very good. I pair it with Malwarebytes and Spybot Search and Destroy.

I've tried Avast in the past but didn't like the interface so much.
