It used to be nvidia who rushed out a card that was barely better, AMD shaking things up!

Sorry that the architecture bit is delayed - the plan was for there to be a double-whammy of 5870 content on launch day. Unfortunately, I went down with a fever on my flight to the US at the weekend and that has put me back a few days :(

a very in-depth look would be fantastic :)

agree with ^, crysis very high with 4x AA. surely if you pay £300 on a new generation card, 1920x1200 4xAA very high is to be expected.

power consumption is fantastic though, won't be surprised to see 5890x2 in the future.

Whats with all the Crysis crap. How many times do you want to play this game? I played it two years ago and do not want to play it again and again and again with every new cartd that is released. Besides that, this card should be tested on DX11 titles with mature drivers anyway.

It's a very nice card, only needs one GPU to run everything and had less power consumption in idle then all other cards combined. Since most of the times those things are idling away at the windows desktop saving you a high energy bill. What else do you want?

Crysis has been one of the most demanding games in terms of graphics performance even after 2 years. It's lifespan in that position makes it useful in comparing reviews for products over that time period because we are still using roughly the same test.

As for testing with mature drivers and DX11 games... would you rather wait until Xmas to get this review while the card has been on the market for 3 months or get it now so that you can go off something more than the marketing hype?

I was also what you guys thought about the noise compared the the 4870 @ stock and the 4890 @ stock. Was it any louder or quieter? Also would have been nice if you included a 4870 in the power consumption so we could see how much the extra performance effects the power consumption of the card it's replacing.

Just not feeling the love for these cards.......

Seriously, with all the big name PC games these days being console ports, why do you need a DX11 card with 160GB of bandwidth, when the games are being made with DX9 and 25GB cards in the 360 & PS3 as the benchmark.

5yrs ago, the PC led the way with new gfx technologies in games, but with the extended life span of the current consoles set to go on until 2012-13 at least, we are at a gfx level dead end.

ATM the only use these cards have is for willy wavers and synthetic benchmarks.........

Looks to me that the card is memory limited, as in Crysis, the only cards that beat it have 2GB of memory.

    Bring on the 5870 2GB!

    Must agree with Hustler.
Since all the games are ported from PS3/360 what's the point?
Also I should add the same about DX11/10. Few effects cannot justify the costs.

When the new consoles come out 2012-13 then seems it will be time to upgrade.
Heh even the next Crysis will be console port!!!!!

    AWESOME!

A solid card and DX11 ready for Win7 and the DX11 games coming soon.

I am waiting for the 5870x2, probably the only card worthy of replacing my 4870x2.
I want Eyefinity!!! Lets go ATI and Samsung, get those Eyefinity cards and bezel-free monitors out out out!

It is a good day to be a PC Gamer!!

    Yours in Eyefinity Plasma,
    Star*Dagger

*Puts newegg-com on auto refresh to know the second eyefinity products are available*

I'm overhelmed by all the techpowerup about this and that company launches HD5870 and HD5850... Nice. The problem is - there was 0 pieces of this card in my country (Slovakia), 1st batch will arrive at start of october (1-5.10.2009) and my card will probably arrive in 2nd batch (20-30.10.2009). And i'm at spot 23-27 from that certain supplier, so those poor souls who are further in list (my supplier says there are over 300 orders on list) will have to wait a long, long time.

I'm sorry ATI, but you should either have scrapped the Dell order, or postponed the launch by a month. This is a stupid joke on us, customers.

Not a bad performance, at least ATi will have a chance to pump out some solid drivers, before Nvidia gets a chance to launch its card. I reckon the GT300 won't massively outperform it in a gaming environment, however GPGPU compute will be another matter.

Hey guys, these results mean clearly a CPU limited performance and immature driver.

This single GPU card has a big potential of power. The link below we can see the 5870 surpassing GTX295 at 1920x1200 8xAA/16xAF, 2560x1600 4xAA/16xAF and 2560x1600 8xAA/16xAF:

    http://www.computerbase.de/artikel/hardware/grafikkarten/2009/test_ati_radeon_hd_5870/23/# :jawdrop:

I suppose HD5870 processes 2,7 TFLOPs (2 x 4890 power). If it is true, HD5870 beats HD4870X2's power and stays close to that in heavy resolutions! However, its probable price is ridiculous. How much will be the HD5870X2???? 600 pounds? :wallbash:

yeah but the 295 uses 2gb of gddr3, which is equivalent to 1gb of gddr5
