    To whom it may concern:

My i5 2500k even at 4.8ghz is holding back performance with some flight and racing sims. Also holding back GTX 1070 performance to some extent. I know this because even when I had my GTX 970 I had worse performance than people with 970 and more recent CPU.

I have been debating whether to go x99 and 6 core or z170 4 core? I do 3d rendering but having checked a benchmark for a CPU renderer... the difference in speed between i7 6700 and the 6 core i7 6800 was something like 20 seconds. In other words... a considerably more expensive motherboard and more expensive CPU just to render 20 seconds faster. If I went x99 I would also have to ditch my CPU waterblock and buy a new one.

I don't see VR SLI becoming established anytime over the next 20 years so the extra lanes on x99 won't really benefit me. The only advantage I can see is that 3 or 4 years from now I could unplug the 6 core and plug in a used 8 or 10 core.

I am leaning more towards the 4 core i7 6700k.

I can run up to 64gb ram on the 4 core (currently running 32gb on my i5 2500k).

How have you determined that the 2500K is holding back your GPU? Have you seen it drop from 98-100% usage when in games?

Also, what res. are you at? I am assuming 1080P...?

    I'm guessing this isn't 1080P, but VR :)

I run DCS world which is very cpu intensive. There was a detailed performance analysis someone did showing FPS on DCS with a range of processors from the old i7 2600k right up to the latest 6 core and the i7 6700k. The conclusion was that CPU architecture does boost performance on DCS world. The i7 2600k was right at the bottom of the performance chart.

I run VR so my res is that of HTC Vive (2160 x 1080).

Going back to when I had my GTX 970... I was complaining of low FPS on Elite Dangerous and other 970 users were saying they had no issues. In every case they had a more modern CPU.

Yar. DCS world, Elite D very demanding in VR!

I can get away with indie games with my current CPU but not some of the more demanding stuff.

From what I've seen on render benchmarks the i7 6700k is rendering in half the time my 2500k takes.
