Robert Jordan - Wheel of time, it is epic although I will have to sadly say there will be no more books from him, as he has passed away
+1! On the sci-fi theme; Peter F Hamilton is easily my favourite author, all of his books are excellent though the Night's Dawn Trilogy gets the most praise from me. Max Brooks for his awesome World War Z and Zombie Survival Guide, they're both absolutely brilliant. I just read Dune as well and I'm intrigued by it, need to read some of the other books in the series. Oh yeah, and Michael Crichton for general inventiveness and potential realism.
Terry Pratchett (got most of the Discworld series in hardback, and I intend to replace the remaining 4 or 5 paperbacks when I can) Jim Butcher (actually I need to get teh latest Dresden book) Terry Brooks (both the Shannara and Landover series) And I just started reading The Black Magician Trilogy by Trudi Canavan (well, I say I've just started, but I'm on the 2nd book).
Sir Terry Pratchett Jim Butcher Douglas Adams EE "Doc" Smith James Swallow (a personal friend) and the various authors of the "Perry Rhodan" series
Another vote for Pete Hamilton - the last book of the Void trilogy is brilliant, but even at his worst (Misspent Youth) he's head and shoulders above other Sci Fi writers IMHO. Pratchett is always a reliable read - but of his books, I've enjoyed some of his 'young adult' books most recently - Namely 'Nation' & all three of the Tiffany Aching series. Like fantasy novels with a bit of grit? Try G RR Martin (A Song of Ice & Fire) or Joe Abercrombie (The First Law).
David Eddings Mercedes Lackey Anne McCaffrey Terry Brooks Terry Practchet Greg Bear just for writing eon (haven't read much of his other stuff) Yes I like my fantasy
William Gibson - Sprawl and Bridge Trilogies Neal Stephenson - Snow Crash, The Diamond Age Douglas Adams - HHGTTG, The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul Terry Pratchett - Diskworld series Peter F Hamilton - Night's Dawn Trilogy Everything up to Rainbow Six was good, but after that he seems to have fallen over. I found Red Rabbit really hard going and The Teeth of the Tiger was pants-on-head retarded. They didn't even have the good decency to translate the book from American English to British English. No, it wasn't done for the other, but no one in Red Storm Rising was running around giving it 'terrorists r bad m'kay' and cramming everything they got their hand on into 'fanny packs.'
Alastair Reynolds Philip K. Dick (Awesome) Peter F. Hamilton Raymond E. Feist H.P. Lovecraft Robert Jordan David Thorpe (Hybrids was very good, is there a sequel?) Richard Dawkins p) J.R.R. Tolkein Douglas Adams Richard Brodie (Viruses Of The Mind is an extremely interesting book) Bruce Lee (Not fiction, but an amazing author) Edgar Allan Poe Frank Herbert Jonathan Swift Stephen King Fritjof Capra Jack McDevitt I am a prolific reader, mainly sci-fi, fantasy and non-fiction (mainly on zen, martial arts and memetics)
aaaahhh so you do have taste good man I just got his last but they only had it on hard back and the next one is the end of PUG I think
Iain [m] Banks, both his sci-fi and fiction are great reading, Terry Pratchett, makes me giggle insanely + yes the Tiffany Aching series is great fun, problem is my god-daughter now wants a Nac Mac Feegle for Christmas, should never have read wee small men to her Clive Cussler Matthew Reilly Jack Higgins Frank Herbert, for Dune series Arthur C Clarke Douglas Adams Isaac Asimov Orson Scott Card Philip K Dick Larry Niven Stephen Leather Wilbur Smith Alan Dean Foster, for spawning what was quite possibly cheesiest sci-fi flick ever Robert Heinlien Dean Koontz Stephen King + Bachman Books David Weber, yay for the honorverse series Eric Flint, cus I love the 1632 series hmm I appear to love my scifi
Whilst this is true, his notes and pieces he had written before his demise are being used by Brandon Sanderson to finish the story. I read the Gathering Storm last year and next month Towers of Midnight is released. The series will be finished soon fear ye not. Only one more book after this upcoming one... Also thanks for the tip Kovoet I'll be sure to look him up.
I might have to break the habit of a lifetime and get the hardback And you'll like the tasteful end result of the revamp of my Q build mate, no pink this time
Iain M Banks Raymond Feist David Eddings Gail Martin George Martin Tolkein............... You get the idea.
