    +1!

On the sci-fi theme; Peter F Hamilton is easily my favourite author, all of his books are excellent though the Night's Dawn Trilogy gets the most praise from me.

Max Brooks for his awesome World War Z and Zombie Survival Guide, they're both absolutely brilliant.

I just read Dune as well and I'm intrigued by it, need to read some of the other books in the series.

Oh yeah, and Michael Crichton for general inventiveness and potential realism.

Terry Pratchett (got most of the Discworld series in hardback, and I intend to replace the remaining 4 or 5 paperbacks when I can)
Jim Butcher (actually I need to get teh latest Dresden book)
Terry Brooks (both the Shannara and Landover series)

And I just started reading The Black Magician Trilogy by Trudi Canavan (well, I say I've just started, but I'm on the 2nd book).

Finally someone mentioned Iain Banks, he has to be my favourite. Closely followed by Iain McEwan.

Another vote for Pete Hamilton - the last book of the Void trilogy is brilliant, but even at his worst (Misspent Youth) he's head and shoulders above other Sci Fi writers IMHO.

Pratchett is always a reliable read - but of his books, I've enjoyed some of his 'young adult' books most recently - Namely 'Nation' & all three of the Tiffany Aching series.

Like fantasy novels with a bit of grit? Try G RR Martin (A Song of Ice & Fire) or Joe Abercrombie (The First Law).

William Gibson - Sprawl and Bridge Trilogies
Neal Stephenson - Snow Crash, The Diamond Age
Douglas Adams - HHGTTG, The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul
    Terry Pratchett - Diskworld series
    Peter F Hamilton - Night's Dawn Trilogy

Everything up to Rainbow Six was good, but after that he seems to have fallen over. I found Red Rabbit really hard going and The Teeth of the Tiger was pants-on-head retarded.

They didn't even have the good decency to translate the book from American English to British English. No, it wasn't done for the other, but no one in Red Storm Rising was running around giving it 'terrorists r bad m'kay' and cramming everything they got their hand on into 'fanny packs.'

Whilst this is true, his notes and pieces he had written before his demise are being used by Brandon Sanderson to finish the story. I read the Gathering Storm last year and next month Towers of Midnight is released. The series will be finished soon fear ye not. Only one more book after this upcoming one...

Also thanks for the tip Kovoet I'll be sure to look him up.
