Notepad++ is my number one free bit of software. It offers tabbed documents, code completion, automated backups in case you delete something you needed, and has a ton of plugins if it doesn't do something you need. The regex find and replace and the various conversion options are great!

Except for Firefox, Paint.Net, FileZilla FTP, VMware Server 2.0 and CDBurnerXP there's no other free apps that I use as my home PC is for gaming only, and my work PC has bulk licensed software on it.

    But seriously:

    Chromium
    Handbrake
    UFRaw
    Openoffice
Picasa (mind most of my photo work is done in Aperture 3 these days)
    Axel (command-line download manager!)
    Synaptic package manager
    Pingus!

No because your parents had to pay a lot of money to develop you to where you are ;)

It's a product of the state and must be handed back when you are retired.

The only free apps I use daily are:

    FileZilla FTP client
    DOSbox
Avast AV Free on a couple of rigs
Safari, FF and Chrome, use them all for testing

I'm a bit of a download junkie though, and am always trying new stuff out. For office stuff, I like to stick to MS Office, but that's more out of habit than not liking the free alternatives.

    In order of importance:

-Firefox. It makes my browsing much more enjoyable.
-Steam. I play all my games with it and it's an excellent chat client.
-Skype. I talk on Skype for literally 4+ hours a day. It really helps me keep in touch with friends. Obtw, if you'd like to chat send me a PM :D
-Open Office. Because sometimes I actually do work on my PC.
-Chrome. Because sometimes Firefox doesn't cut it.

A quick mention for Microsoft Visual C# 2010 Express Edition and ASP.NET Express.

Fully functional development environments for free.

It's not that I can't live without them but considering a) it's Microsoft and b) how fully-featured they are, it's amazing that they are free.

    Posted this on another forum.

As somebody who appreciates free, here is my list of Top 10 Free software.
Remember this is my opinion, based on continued use and a little experience.

    No. 1 Open Office 3

Completely M$ compatible word, spreadsheet, power point, data base, drawing and more...package.
Better than Office 2007 in my opinion. It is actually better at opening old versions of word documents than MS Word is.

    No. 2 CCleaner

Not just a crap cleaner but a registry cleaner, start menu tool, program uninstaller and general PC hero. The first of Piriforms excellent free tools on my list.

    No.3 Microsoft Security Essentials

Yes I know I bet you thought you would never see a M$ program in a list of decent free stuff but here it is. This no add, no nag, small foot print anti-virus works well and is extremely simple to use. Regular definition updates and a good false positive record has made this one of the best free anti-virus programs out there.

    No. 4 Malewarebytes

Backing up MSE with this just about does it for a complete security suit for your PC.

    No. 5 Defraggler

The second Piriform program and one of the best defraggers I have found. Significantly better than the standard M$ defrag tool.

    No. 6 Password Safe

An excellent password generator and safe for all your passwords. Allows you to; copy and paste passwords easily (prevents key logging), never worry about forgetting your password and create some of the most mind bogglingly complex passwords with the press of a button.

    No. 7 7 Zip
Is a file archiver with a high compression ratio, creates 7z, ZIP, GZIP, BZIP, BZIP2 and TAR. Also allows you to unpack RAR files, as well as many others.

    No. 8 Bulk Rename Utility

OK this may not be in everyones top 10 list but if you had as many photos to rename as I do, then it would. An 'at first glance' slightly confusing program that once mastered saves a lot of time.

    No. 9 Fastone Image Viewer

A 5 star CNET rated image viewer with some extremely handy tools, too many to list.

    No. 10 Paint.NET

    A brilliant paint package.
