i have one of those compaqs, its parts are scattered all over my room do you know about the cpu speed jumpers?
CPU Speed jumpers? No I guess I don't. Will you please tell me more. Is this this so you can over clock it?
Hah, I have one of those nasty old Compaqs too! Alas mine was in such a state I had to bin it! I still have a few bits of it lying around though, but no mobo. I was thinking of modding it myself but decided against it - they are just too nasty, with the PSU in the wrong place, strange mobo tray, etc. You're doing a great job on this mod!
Phase 5: Painting Phase 5: Painting Materials and Supplies • Duplicolor Vinyl and Fabric Dye • Duplicolor Metalcast green • Duplicolor Mirage green/purple • Rubbing alcohol • Goo Gone • 400 Grit wet/dry sandpaper • Glazing putty Procedure • First all the stickers were removed with the Goo Gone. • Next the plastic is cleaned with rubbing alcohol. The pieces all cleaned and ready for vinyl dye. • The vinyl dye was then applied in several thin coats. • The dye dries very fast and second coats can be applied in a few minutes. The pieces after they have been dyed. • The interior Skeleton and drive cages were prepared with 400 grit sandpaper. • I didn't use the Metalcast primer or an adhesion promoter so the paint has a tendency to scratch easily. The motherboard tray painted. The drive cages painted. The interior skeleton painted. • Next the screws and standoffs were painted with neon green model paint. The neon green bits. • The bezel had a place on it with the Compaq logo on it. • A few coats of glazing putty and some sanding took care of that. The glazing putty before sanding. • Again the case and bezel surfaces were prepared with 400 grit wet/dry sandpaper. • The Mirage paint system is a three part system. A primer, color coat and clear coat. The primer layer. After color and clear coat. • You can see the putty left some air bubbles, I didn't refil it because I plan on covering it with a custom badge later. • This stuff changes colors with the angle and has a great finish. It was a bit expensive ($20 US) but worth every penny. • The outside was finished off with rubbing compound and a coat of wax. Props and Slops Props: The paint job came out beautiful I would use that Mirage again. Slops: The glazing putty had air bubbles and wasn't sanded perfect
Thanks, this was my first mod. I think the oddness of this case is one of the reasons I wanted to mod it. I figured I could get a very unique case out of it.
Phase 6: PSU and IDE Cable Mods Phase 6: PSU and IDE Cable Mods Materials and Supplies • Xacto Knife • Heat shrink • Heat gun • Green electric tape • Scrap piece of lexan • Silicone Procedure • This case came with a psuedo rounded cable so I decided to try and make some more. • First I removed the pin connectors on the IDE and floppy cables. • Then I very carefully slit them with an Xacto knife. The connectors removed and the cable split. • Next the heat shrink was placed over the folded cables. • The connectors were reconnected and secured with I tested the cable to make sure I didn't have cross talk. • Once everything was working the cables were removed and a heat gun was used to shrink the heat shrink. A finished IDE cable. • Then I removed the old fan from the PSU and replaced it with a lighted one. The new lighted fan. • Next the moltex connectors on the PSU were removed and painted neon green. • Then heat shrink was placed over the wires the moltex were replaced and the heat gun was again used to shrink the heat shrink. • I ran out of heat shrink for the motherboard connections, but had some green electric tape handy, so I used that. The finished PSU. • Before mounting the PSU I had to fassion a new bracket from lexan. • The piece was placed in a vice and heated with a heat gun then bent. • This was secured using silicone. Bending of the bracket. Early morning modding, like my southpark pajamas? • Finally the whole thing was put back together and tested. • Now it was time to install the OS. • Software installed was Debian Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP. All put back together with a little wire management. Props and Slops Props: I only broke one floppy cable while trying to make my rounded cables. Slips: I didn't measure how much heat shrink i needed.
acutally, somone already did it! It was a competition and he won. He Used to sell you an IC to mod it. Can't buy them anymore though. Maybe on ebay. But in the meantime, I'll settle with controlling him with the IRDA on my pocket PC. Final update comming soon....
Phase 7: Putting it all together Phase 7: Putting it all together Materials and Supplies • Duct tape • Silicone • Vasoline • Soldering iron • Silver pin stripe. Procedure • First I had to mount Obay into the face plate. • I used vasoline on the moving parts to keep the silocone off of them. • I used duct tape to hold it in place while the silcone dried. Duct tape will fix anything. I never could decide what to do with the ears. • Next the powersupply was connected to the 5v line on a multex connector. • I put a switch in to turn Obay on and off. • I also put two push button switches for "pet" and "tickle" interactions with the furby. • The motion sensor was mounted on top of the lower door so when opened it would trigger the sensor. • Finally a power switch for the CCs was soldered in. The makeshift control panel. • The lexan panels were then siliconed in place and the edges finished with pin stripe. • Next the UV CCs were mounted and held in place with silcone. This stuff is nice because you can remove it, but it sticks well to smooth surfaces. • Finally I made some lexan feet with the hole saw. There is a green LED in each one of those feet. • Once all the electronics were connected and working I put the side panels and bezel back on. Lights on Lights off Now finished, Obay is my friendly little webserver. In fact he's serving up all of the pictures in my posts. Say hi Obay, "me Obay".
HOLY MOTHER OF MOD THATS SCARY!!! Are you sticking a discreet 666 on the top??? Seriously though. I love this... the case is cool and the idea is (whilst terrifying) very sweet! Actually this case should be put in the room of a naughty child. Make the eyes glow and stick the voice box in there. That kid would start behaving promptish!!
Obay is kinda slow to me. took me ages to open those pictures, though I got fat cable. Nice project, but isn't it making to much noise? ~Xeno~
Actually I dont' think it's the computer as much as my bandwidth. I only have cable and upload is kinda slow. I'm working on getting more bandwidth and a static IP soon. As for making noise, remember I put a power switch on it? If he starts to bug me, I turn him off.
Yup it definetly freaks me out. Are you all done or is there more stuff that you are going to do? If you are all done can you post a small video of the demonic little guy in action? Great job by the way.
Yeah I'm finished working on it for now. I took one video but it didn't come out too well (it was dark). I'll try and shoot a better one tonight.
inbetween the ram and the cpu by the ide connectors is some jumpers and some text explaining them sorry it took so long to reply but im very lazy
