So I was just watching Mythbusters when I noticed their countdown clock bears an uncanny resemblance to G-gnomes WMD case mod. Made me chuckle Actual mod.
That's uncanny. Is it a 'shop or is it actually WMD-MK II? No one would go to such lenghs to make it almost the same. I remember reading the original thread and it took ages to make this thing.
It does definitely look the same, but knowing mythbusters it will be something they put together. There is some subtle differences such as the keypad, and the strips next to it.
I'm sorry but that's blatantly a copy - there are too many similarities in the structure and general layout to be coincidence tbh.
Copy? Rip-off? I'd be quite happy to see a CGI-version of my case mod in Mythbusters. Maybe it's just me, but to me it seems like they've seen the case, thought it's sick awesome and then found good use for the looks as a countdown clock on the special episode.
I'd probably be flattered if it was my mod Kinda tempted to sate my curiosity, doubt I would get any response but might try later.
I'd be pretty pissed if someone made such a blatant copy of my mod and put it on air as their countdown clock. Obviously they can't really wave a big disclaimer around saying "Clock modelled after G-gnome's PC mod!" but hopefully they at least contacted him and said something along the lines of "Hey we loved your case and are using it as inspiration for a countdown in one of our episodes".
Loooooong time since I have been on here, but I had to stop by and see the chat about this when I saw a copy of his mod on Mythbusters. I sure hope G-Gnome was contacted and given some sort of recognition for use of a likeness of his mod. I thought it was a photoshopped version of his mod, but it looks like it was done by their graphics department using his mod as a guide.
Conspiracy! There's no doubt that it's the same, and to be honest, I think Mythbusters using the design without permission (we assume) shows a pretty blatant lack of professional courtesy towards G-Gnome and his design. I study whole modules on professional practice in the engineering industries, including professional courtesy, moral decisions and on a more legal note, patents and copyrights. If in fact this has been used without permission from the original designer, this is a perfect case in point to demonstrate that all three of the above are breached on a regular basis.
There's no doubt that WMD is the insiration, just hope they sought permission first. Wow, there's a blast from the past.
I have to agree. Though if they didn't I don't think it would be illegal (since they're not trying to sell it).. just disrespectful. And... Holy crap! Hi Zap!
Sue them? It's not exactly the same, you can't sue them with the differences shown in between the two pictures.
I don't think suing would be all that successful. Personally, I'd email and say "hey, if my mod was the inspiration, how about some credit somewhere, eh?" I expect Adam/Jamie are reasonable on that front.
