My R9 280x has been having a lot of issues, from artifacting to not even displaying a picture on PC start up. The time has come to let it go. So my question here is, is the 1070 worth it over the 1060. The 1060 costs a couple hundred dollars less and I just assume I can OC to be on par with a 1070. I apologize if this has been discussed before, I have not followed any tech news in a couple of years.
There's quite a jump in performance from the 1060 to the 1070. I was looking at both options but in the end I decided to get a 980Ti as it's pretty much on par with the 1070, and a preowned one can be bought for a lot less than a new 1070. My EVGA 980Ti is still under warranty so if it was to develop a fault I'd almost certainly get a replacement 980Ti or a 1070 through EVGA's warranty program. Also bear in mind that there are two versions of the 1060 (3GB and 6GB) and there's roughly a 10% boost in performance with the 6GB card. For this reason the 3GB cards are usually a lot cheaper. TL;DR, I'd vote for the 1060 6GB if you want to buy new; but if you're open to buying preowned I'd suggest getting an EVGA 980Ti which should have at least a year of warranty remaining.
As always, depends on what resolution you are playing at. If it's 1080p, a GTX 1070 isn't really going to offer much benefit over a 6GB 1060... Unless you're one of those weirdos that claims to be able to see the difference between 100FPS and 120FPS If you want to make use of DSR, or are planning on not upgrading again for as long as possible, then the 1070 might make more sense.
I haven't checked the prices, but from what I understand, 1070s and 1060s have had their prices vastly inflated by the debacle that is cryptocurrency mining (IMHO). Is there any way you can stretch to a 1080? These aren't sort after by those mining gits as they don't mine so well.
I was going to mention that, as I did in another thread, that the only real options for a decent performance per $/£ right now exist at opposite ends of the spectrum - the 1050 Ti and the 1080. Paying close to £300 for a 1060 and over £400 for a 1070 is just bonkers... And it's obviously even worse on the Radeon side!
Find a used evga card with warranty still on it as the warranty is transferable without hassle unlike pretty much any other card.
In outright performance terms the 1070 is easily worth it over the 1060. The delta is too large for any sort of real world OC to overcome. However what about a used 980ti? Similar performance to a 1070 but should be cheaper to source.
I was going to get a 1070 till i seen a 1080 going for £400 on ebay with EVGA warranty. Always worth a look.
Mining craze has hit prices heavily. You cannot overclock a 1060 to 1070 performance, You cannot actually get close. Its between 35 - 40% gap, With the 1080 another 30% ahead of that. Nvidia did proper spacing this time after the 970 catching the 980 when overclocked. Check second hand or wait for mining craze to die
